The 2010 Pismo Vintage Trailer rally is on and it is starting to look like a swap meet, a good swap meet.

I didn't think the prices are all that bad, that is if they work. Some look to be in better shape than others.

It's kind of one of those things...an impulse buy. There are lots of lanterns and stoves around for next to nothing although the pre-war stuff is getting harder to find. On the 49 242 above....doesn't matter if it works or not...still has a hammered vent on it. That's the big item that can kill value...get a good vent and an undented or in the case of the 242's a fount that hasn't been polished through the nickel, pitted or rusted through. You can always get the rest of the parts easily. I think it's much better to find one that doesn't work but isn't damaged. Another +, the original globe, not the repops made in China. Doug

At what point does a hobby become an obsession?

I'm leaning toward that line being crossed at the $100 Coleman lantern point.

I guess my "cheap" gene is dominant over my "hobby" gene.

There are bargains to be had if you really shop but many of the people need that perfect item to fill their needs.
I have all my stuff, most of this is just eye candy for me but if the one item you need shows up,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I completely agree with you guys. I have three or four 242's and I've never paid more than 15 for one. They ended up being great restoration projects and the outcome was good for all of them. I'm just not going to spend a hundred dollars on a lantern because I use mine. I don't buy them to sit on a shelf. Nothing wrong with that, i'm just not interested in "shelf queens." I find that I buy just about every cheap lantern I come across just to have the parts for a restoration project down the road. I have more parts than I do lanterns. Doug is right. The vent is the key. Pristine vents are like Coelacanths. Just when you thought they were all gone one or two pop up...but they dont come around often.

Doug:

I will have to wander over and ask. He kept talking about a Gold Bond lantern going for $1400 on e-bay. I suspect it is a big price. I wished him well in finding a couple Japanese in a bidding war.
