Coleman model 9 stove ?

Postby Rolly » Tue May 18, 2010 12:54 am

I paid $10 for what I think is an early Coleman model 9 stove from the vender next door at the at the auto swap meet last weekend. I used the leaf blower to blow the leaves and spider webs out and extracted the dead spider from inside the burner. I oiled the leather gave it 20 pumps and some of the worst smelling gas came out. What is the best way to clean the tank? Anyone tried POR 15 hi temp paint? My stove has some rust in a couple of places. Thanks

Dump the old gas and use some carb cleaner in it. If it is rusty add BB's and shake. Dump them out and then rinse with carb cleaner again. After that pump it up about 30-40 times and leave it over night to check for leaks. If it holds pressure you should be good to go.

If it's just the stove and not the stove/oven combo...you can get by with regular rattle can paint. They don't get that hot, unless you let it get out of control. I've checked with a laser thermometer. Watch putting too large of a pan on the burner as it will throw the heat out into the body of the stove and scorch it...ask me how I know.

If it has the oven body that folds up on top. I used an engine enamel on that portion as it's good for 500 degrees and still has a gloss to it. I don't know much on the POR 15 products other than the gas tank coatings. It's more a display item than a real user though. The older ones can be tough to get parts on so only use it occasionally.
