New turd, no glass

Postby Cliffmeister2000 » Thu Jul 08, 2010 6:05 pm

I picked up a turd in pretty nice shape today, at Value Village, for $6.99 plus tax. No glass though. :(

I'll sell you all the turds you want for a buck each. But, they won't have glass, either (that would hurt). :o

CD

anyone want to take a shot at lowering the bar even further in here?

Check you local Ace Hardware or True Value store. Most will carry the globe.

Bass Pro huh? That's a good price.

Congrats Cliff! Is it a regular 275 or a 275A model?

I don't see an "A" on it, so I'm guessing a 295. Doesn't look like it was used much at all!

That is a 275. The 275A only has on & off on behind the valve. If it has light, it is a 275.

Also, Bob hitchcock of oldcolemanparts.com has these globes on sale this month for $14 including shipping. You need a model 5114.

Okay, I got my globe from Bob! The 275 cleaned up very nicely! $21 total investment. Has a manufacturers date of 8 78 stamped on the bottom.

The other one is a 220F. Many chips in the porcelain. It has some bad rust on the bottom, but I can see "71" stamped there. It came with the globe and mantels, for only $4.99.

Both were purchased at Goodwill stores.

This is the extent of my lantern collection (so far). :D

Now, if I could only locate that container of white gas I have around here somewhere...

Nice Cliff, that one looks sharp now. The 220F looks good too under the dust

better be careful though, that "so far" statement is where I started 30 or so lanterns ago....and there many out there who are in way deeper from the same beginnings

Yup, it needs a good cleaning. It has a lot of chips in the top, a lot of rust on the bottom, and a little of both in between. I wonder, how / what do you restorer folks do about chips in porcelain?

I also have 3 Coleman stoves to work on. I'm a little concerned that the need outweighs my capabilities...

Cliff, about the only real fix is to have it re-porcelained, there is a company in MO that specializes in it. Costs around $30 + shipping to haveone done. Most of the folks I know just watch for a donor with a better vent (which eventually gets fixed too lol). Some have been having some luck using VHT 2000* ceramic paint, but its a flat finish and doesn't come in green.

Post what you need if you get stumped, we have lots of real sharp members here that can help. Stoves aren't any harder than lanterns, just different. You built a teardrop, this is easy in comparison
