I learned my lesson. DON"T soak the leather pumps in motor oil. Neatsfood oil only. :x Apparently the motor oil breaks down the leather. Wrecked three pumps last night trying to get it too light, two leather pump cups and one rubber. Today after work, while in good light I looked in the chamber that the pump goes into and there is a lot of rust along the sides and lots of chewed up leather in the bottom. No wonder it ate three pumps last night. Time take the lantern apart again. Sure glad I bought a check valve removal tool. :) Anybody have any suggestions on how I should clean up the rust in the chamber? Navel Jelly? Fine sandpaper?

Dawn, I cleaned up one awhile back with a brake cylinder hone. But if you don't happen to have one of those handy, I've also used some fine sand paper wrapped around a wooden dowel, with lots of flushig as I went while holding the fount upside down.

I agree with Shaun. Make sure you get all the little bit out before you try pumping it up. You don't want anything in the check valve.

 Just took it apart and it is full of crud in the fount. Lots of sludge came out with the fuel. Looks like chunks of varnish? Going to get some carb cleaner tomorrow and try to clean the fount better.

Get some BB's and put them in the tank with some carb cleaner. Shake and pour it out. Repeat.

Dawn:
I would have guessed that you cleaned the fount BEFORE you repainted it. That's if we are talking about the one I gave you. Lesson learned huh?
The BB's and carb cleaner work good together to dislodge the crud. I took my fount to the hardware store and bought an assortment of corks to fit all the openings. That way you can shake the heck out of it. I use the corks when I repaint too. I don't use the new pumps with rubber gaskets. I get the kit to replace the leather ones. I think they work better.
Good luck
Tom

Dawn, the up side is that if it's varnish there may not be much rust. The varnish might have kept things sealed. Good luck, you can do it!

I'm with Tom, properly oiled leather does seem to work better.

Tom, I did clean the fount. Just not good enough I guess. That's OK it will give me a chance to do a better job on the paint. Kinda hung a run on the back side.
