Lamp test drive..

Postby rainjer » Mon Nov 08, 2010 10:07 pm

I decided to take my lamp for a test drive tonight with the shade on for the first time. I think I like it...

I did find a fuel leak that I had to fix when I lit it the first time but no big deal.

I have seen several lamps (with and without shades) on ebay. Since we are always warned not to burn lanterns and stoves within an enclosed space, how do these lamps differ? Just curious. I think having one would be great, especially since I love the smell of a gas-burning stove or lantern... omg, does that mean I'm a napthaholic??! :o

First - define an "inclosed space". That is very subjective. I would not even think of burning one in a small room that is completely sealed up. I had it running in the basement. The room is 14' X 16' & the door was open to the rest of the house. These kind of lamps have been used indoors for almost 100 years. The Amish still use them today. I would say with modern, air tight house you just need to use some common sense. Crack a window if you are concerned and never run them while you are sleeping. Really, what is the diffence betweenn burning this lamp and a big 4 burner gas stove?

They work the same as a double mantle lantern. This on has very low odor. My wife did not eve smell it was on before she saw it.

Really a cool lamp Jeremy!....I'd like to find one of those and do it up with a vintage type late 50's shade...you know. those type that had the 2 rings, one smaller but taller that fits inside the other with a braided type fastener for the shade material....Would be a good source for pre-heat before I go to bed in the standy. That looks really great! What does it look like without the shade? I've never seen one. I'm assuming it is different than a regular camp lantern?

Thanks,

Not unless you are cutting mothballs into small pieces and smoking them like crack!

Seriously....I pre-heat a tear with a lantern regularly when it's down into the upper 20's and 30's. The thing here is to heat the structure more than just the air, I open the roof vent/ windows a bit. I vent all that stuff....just relying on the radiant heat to warm things up. Once you open the door and pull the lantern out (air exchange happens then), the latent heat in the walls will heat up the tear when you go to bed. I NEVER do it if I'm in the tear/standy with it.

On the standy...I pre-heat it again with a lantern, but do have a vent open on it. I don't leave it running when I go to bed. Don't shut a lantern down and leave it inside the trailer...lots of unburned gas fumes, they stink when you shut them down...I just set it outside while it shuts down. Again, I just use it to warm the interior structure prior to going to bed. Once the walls/ceiling are warmed up they will give off heat for quite a while.

It's not for everyone, especially if you aren't familiar with the operation of a gas lantern, however, many people used to heat with a Humphries type lamp back in the day, (propane wall mounted unit in a standy).

Don't do what I do....do what you are most comfortable with and feel safe in doing. Doug

Awesome! (Now, I want one, too!). Thanks for posting the picture without the shade. That is a great looking lamp.

Dig the nice red 200a next to it, too. I think the red 200a's are a very aesthetically appealing little lantern.

Jeremy, I've got 4 of those so far, Except mine have the hand held air pump. Everyone thinks I have a generator during power outages.

Have been wanting to put some shades on but was holding out for a few extra $$ to spring for mica globes. I was worried about breakage with the glass ones. I might go ahead with a couple of those though.

Nice lamp, that one. Do you have a model number for it?
