A new project...now complete 12/5

Postby doug hodder » Thu Nov 11, 2010 7:10 pm

I just picked up a new project from Steve E, a 413C. It was his uncles, bought it 2nd hand in '54 I believe. It's really nice and straight, just got some scorching on it. I love those flat ended tanks! I'll get it bead blasted/ stripped this weekend and start putting it back together (done up original). Thanks for the gift Steve....I'll give it a good home! Doug

w00t! Congratz on the new project. I know it'll look spanking new when you are done. That's one serious scorch mark, btw!

Got it all apart, did a bit of straightening on some parts, all glass beaded, some parts in primer, tank painted in a hammered copper color.

The tank needed to be flushed with BB's like 4 times till it washed clean. I'm thinking of applying the sprayed on Coleman logo from the 30's on the tank in a black gloss. The same stencil I cut for the black 2E I did. It's not original...but no big deal....it can be removed easily. I think it will add to the "vintage" look of the project, besides it will break up that big long tank appearance. I'm not a Coleman purist!

It's supposed to snow like a foot this weekend and since I've got the Nomad in the garage...don't know if I'll get it painted. Doug

Looking good Doug. As usual

Last week I picked up a 425c in local thrift store for $10. Put a new fuel cap gasket in it and it burns. I wonder how that tank would look with some hammered paint. copper, silver or what ever they might have. Or maybe I will just get hammered myself.

Randy...those 425's are great stoves...my favorite of the Colemans. I like the hammered finish as it has more additives in it over the straight copper color lays on thicker than the straight copper, and at times doesn't tend to wash off/discolor the paint if you slop fuel on it....just my experience however. Lookin' good Doug!

Oh that nasty S word already!! I've spent this whole week instructing 400 people on pre-storm equipment inspection. Everyone was split up into groups. After doing my spill 16 times I think I am suffering from deja vu!

Yea, I think we are going to get a few inches the nasty S word this weekend. Will completely kill my job, which hasn't been giving me many hours the past month anyway. Oh well.

Doug. I keep a 425e or something I got back in the 80's in the trailer. I have used it a lot since then in my VW camper van and then it was the shop stove for heating bearings/gears and such to slip on shafts. Fill a pan with cheap motor oil and heat it up until can just see wisps of vapor off it. Turn out the fire and fish out the part. Then I built the trailer and it went back to being a camp stove.

I finished up the 413C today...It has some paint issues on the inside corners of the box, but I'll let it cure really hard and tend to that in a couple of weeks. Haven't built a fire in it yet, but don't expect any problems with that...maybe later today. I took artistic liberty and put on the vintage Coleman stencil on the fuel tank. It was just so big and long...seemed to need something in my opinion. Doug
