Looking for kerosene lanterns

Postby ERV » Mon Nov 15, 2010 6:55 am

Hi Guys
Well the flea market season is over around here. So I have been on Ebay looking around. I have been collecting old school lanterns. Guess my Grand Dad got me started on it. He gave me his old railroad lantern to camp with when I was 8.
I thought I would like to get a pressure one, but they never show up at the flea markets around here. Any-how, in looking in the kerosene lanterns, I see that a lot of folks have the Coleman gas lanterns listed wrong. They seem to go for pretty good prices. And also listed under kerosene.
If you all go looking, give me a chance at one of the kerosene ones please!

Yes I have noticed that a lot of sellers don't know their kerosene from a hole in the ground.

So I always look at the pictures for a preheating cup. Or Model #. I would like to get a Kerosene lantern myself but I have decided to see what I can scare up locally so I probably will not be bidding agin you. Unless I win the lottery then I will walk all over you. ;) ;)

Interesting, I have seen pressure paraffin lamps from Russia some years back (meaning I have no idea how long).

This little exploration has been enlightening ;)

Janny and I do alot of flea markets and yard sales. But so far the kerosene lanterns that show up are pretty rough. And pretty high in price. I will just keep looking around,
If I come into some money, I'll get you one too. 8)
It is surpicing how folks don't take the time to know what they are selling tho. Good for us, if you can find where they put them.
I started with the old school wick kerosene lanterns, Then started on Coleman stuff. Didn't know they made the pressure type in kerosene till about 8 years ago.
This winter I am going to go through some of my Coleman stuff and thin it out. Seems like if it was green I bought it. Guess I have been doing that sense around 1978.. Moved 8 years ago and took it all and put it in the barn.
Getting the tear ready for the first camping trip was kind of funny, I had way to much stuff packed.

A couple years ago I bought a 200A from a guy that listed it on Craigs list as a kerosene lantern because it said "OIL" on the pump cap. Makes for cheaper lanterns and stoves for us!!

Erv,

I collect Kerosene lanterns and have over 500.

Your best bet, if your going to use it on a regular basis is to go out and buy a new one...look for a Dietz.

A lot of local places still sell them.

There really cheap, $15 gets a big one and $8-10 will get you a small one.

By the time you refurbish an old one you will have far more than that into it and it still may have problems.

It would be nice to have some small kerosene camping lanterns to complement my household power-outage kerosene lamps and have all my Coleman stuff run on the same fuel. So...

Can a Coleman gasoline lantern (220F, in my case) be converted to use kerosene by building in a preheat cup? Or could you use kerosene by waiting out the initial sputtering?

Can you use kerosene in a Coleman gasoline stove (425, in my case) by building in a preheat cup?

Any gotchas?

Got most of mine at flea markets. I watch what I buy and so far have done pretty good. Don't have as many as you thought, think I am close to 100. But I will try to catchup to you,
Don't know why I never saw a pressure lantern run on kerosene, but last year a friend showed me his. Got me interested, so I have been looking around for one.
The flea markets are pretty much done around here so I have been looking on ebay. They are pretty pricey, but yea never know. I'm not in any hurry.
I just posted here to let folks know some of the lanterns are posted as kerosene and are just gas ones. Those seem to go for less compared to the coleman listings. Sure would like to see a bigger picture if you have one. :D
Dave
I don't have a clue if you could do that or not. Seems like if the cup would fit around the pipe you might have a chance. I see them on ebay that burn both. There was at least one on ebay right now. It has a big sticker on it, saying white fuel or kerosene.

Thanks Doug
Maybe we can do a swap, I am going to start going through my Coleman stuff as soon as the weather gets colder. I didn't realize how much I had till I started to straighten up my tool room this summer. When we moved down to the new house, I did it so fast I just moved boxs and got it done. This summer I started to put all my tools and toys on shelves. It is in a small house/garage so I don't have a lot of room now. I got a little done this spring then work really got in the way. But I see I have a lot of doubles and way to much stuff I will never use. Jan and I went to a lot of sales and flea markets when we were young and no kids. She did antiques and I did Coleman. She sold most of hers to make some money and I storied mine, ha.
I will post them on here as I get started, give you guys first chance at them. ;)

This is the only kero pressure lantern I have. It is a AGM single mantle. I have acquired the right globe and a pump assembly since this pic was taken. I actually test ran it on coleman fuel which it surged a bit with probably because of the larger generator.

I have a Petromax Kerosene Pressure lantern. Bought it new, very expensive as compared to a Coleman.

Its a Royal PITA.

Its hard to start, Very dirty and after each use needs almost a total tare down just to clean.

It still works but I'll never light it again.

Its a real good lookin lantern though.

Happy Trails

Erv, if you're interested a 200A can be converted to Kero by installing a 201 generator and a prehet cup. Nice easy conversion. 220s take a little more effort with the gen.

Hey Len, I'll swap you 4 or 5 good running Colemans for that Petromax so it doesn't bother you anymore ;)

Hey, ERV, could you please post a pic of that old railroad lantern?

I think I might be able to get you another one. Someone wanted to give me one (I declined for the moment) because he said that I was "into lanterns"... not realizing that Coleman gas-pressure naptha fever is a very, very specific illness.

Hey Chris
That would be cool. I just got home from work,(9:30) . It has been crazy this year at work. Been cutting into my play time to much. Guess it is good to be working tho.
I will try to get a picture of it tomorrow. Have to dig it out of the tear. Going to put up Christmas lights tomorrow, looks like one more nice day for us then snow coming for next week. :)
