Lanterns, stoves, etc... anything old!

They're called "The Sunshine of the Night", but...

Postby doug hodder » Sat Nov 20, 2010 11:16 am

I took a shower by the light of my 252 Military this morning, thank you Jeremy! Pre-heats the bathroom too! We got our first big snow storm of the season about a foot of wet concrete...woke up to no power, trees down on the lines. Fortunately....I had at least 6 Coleman lanterns in the house all fueled up and ready to go.

I'm kinda hoping that it will be out tonight as well so I can do some garage camping. Got a wood fired stove and the Nomad is all set up and ready to camp. Glad I had the fuel....Wally world had none last time I was in.

Gas pressure lanterns....they're not just for camping! Doug

thats just he reason I keep a few around the house fueled and ready to roll at a moments notice..between the coleman stuff and the new woodstove I can go without power here for as long as the wood and fuel hold out. hope you get to camp for just a night or 2..dont want to make a habit of that circumstance...

Snow all the way over to Lovelock, but only about 2-3 inches and no loss of power, unusual for us, we lose power for no reason at least once a month!

I have one in my stash that my grandparents used for many years in the kitchen and around the house until they got electricity in about 1957..

I also don't consider my 1935 house as "tight". Lots of drafts *sigh*. That's why I was considering getting one of those cool Coleman lamps (like a 139).

I was reading through some old Coleman literature recently (I know, I'm hopeless lol). It recommended removing the top vent on lanterns if used for extended periods in the house. Claimed it improves the air flow and reduces fumes. I tried it and it does. Made sense to me as indoor lamps used the same burners but have no vent.

As the subject came up I thought I'd mention it.

That's one law the Feds haven't passed on us yet! "When Coleman lanterns are outlawed indoors, only outlaws will use them indoors"...

I have a 1897 house... its sorta modernized but I refuse to live in one of these new "tight" houses, I dont think its healthy.. am I weird?? with the woodstove going and the outside temp above 10 degrees odds are I have a window open anyways...

I too use my lanterns for driveway camping two or three times per week!... more now since we're in the darker part of the year.

Why, last night after dinner out, I came home to do laundry and while the machines were doin' their thing I set up my gravity lounger, side table and my '56 200A... then made a cup of after-dinner coffee on one of my camp burners (a quick-n-easy iso-butane, piezo-start single burner. Please don't disown me!)

You, sir, have a special way with words... can't quite put my finger on it; perhaps it's simply your delivery, but, hey, what can one do.

My experience with my three older naptha-pressure single mantles is that they emit a noticeable hydrocarbon odor. It is akin to a perfume... however, there is a plentiful supply of fresh air if burning one just inside, say, an open garage door.

In the interior of a home, I would defintately activate some sort of forced air ventilation, even if it were a simple 20" box fan in a window or doorway.

I've pondered what it would take to provide interior lighting w/ my Coleman lanterns: hang them on a hook just outside the window and hope they aren't stolen.

For me...I don't worry about it if I fire up a couple of lanterns in the house. It wasn't all that long ago that many people used white gas stoves in houses for cooking and plenty of people used kero/white gas for lighting.

I also never shot out my eye with a BB gun and have been known to run frequently with scissors. Doug

 Apparently I am the not the only one that keeps the fuel, lanterns and stove easily accessable in case of a power outage. I also try to get my propane tanks full on the Zollinger just in case we have to move in it for a few days during a storm. "Rob" (the Zollinger) is also better insulated than the shack we live in.
