Vintage holiday cooking....who else is?

Postby doug hodder » Thu Nov 25, 2010 11:55 am

Baking a pumpkin pie for dinner tonight...figured it would be great to fire up the 1930 2E stove/oven combo to do it....came out great! Anyone else using some old stuff to cook with today? Yup...I did it in the house, I figure all those hundreds of thousands of Amish can use gas inside....so can I. Doug

Boy Doug, you got it bad! But that is a great looking pie. Don't eat it all at one sitting. Limit it to 1 piece per football game,

That's awesome. I thought I was the only one.. We ran out of oven space so I fired up the 500A with my oven and baked a Apple & Cherry pie.

Doug's pie!

Postby Rocketgirl » Thu Nov 25, 2010 10:20 pm

Was absolutely fabulous! How does the guy do it? Perfectly flaky crust, delicately fluted along the edges, pumpkin filling was very light and airy with the perfect blend of spices.

Doug -- you can come over for dinner anytime! Glad you could make it and help us celebrate Thanksgiving. Good friends, good food.... that's what it is all about.

Costco? no way, Dean. This had to be a scratch-built pie by Doug. He's just an overall talented guy, ya know.

hate to break it to you, George... but I did most of the cooking. And no one asked for rolaids or a Pepto cocktail! The regular Turkey Day stuff.... Turkey massaged with BUTTER, herbs and garlic. taters with cream and BUTTER (there's a theme going here) and Doug volunteered to do the mashin', green beans with pimentos, garlic and red pepper (Rich stirfried those up), sweet taters with the 'mellows... my mom made homemade rolls...fresh cranberry sauce with mandarin orange juice, stuffing (actually dressing) with italian sausage, celery, carrots, onions, and artichoke hearts. Doug did his Ward Cleaver impersonation and carved the bird. Followed up after the annual watching of The Christmas Story movie with fabulicious pumpkin pie and oodles of whipped cream. Then we started to watch The Godfather and stopped when the horse head hit the bed.

This morning, the fuzzy kids are happily eating the liver (or is it the heart???) with their kibble.... tails a waggin'........Bosco says.... "hi Uncle George!"

Wait a minute....Your turkey gets a massage? Is that how you butter it up before breaking the news to it, it going to be slaughtered and cooked? 8)

I wish I could have been there to see Doug do Ward Cleaver. I hope he was nice, lately he's been a little hard on the Beav.

George....I did get in an impression or 2 of Marlon Brando in the Godfather....don't think you've seen it. It was great grazin' at Rich and Penny's, she made the dressing just for me!....and Ward hasn't had a chance to be hard on the Beaver lately...

PS....Dean....it was a scratch built pie, no Costo crap! Doug
