My Swap Meet Finds

Postby PresTx82 » Tue Dec 07, 2010 6:10 pm

I discovered two Coleman 228F at a swap meet the weekend of Thanksgiving. I paid $17.00 each. After cleaning them up and replacing a part or two they work great.

These lanterns burned for over three hours without more than the initial pump up. I pulled out my model 220E that I mainly use to compare and I had to keep pumpng it up. These other two just kept going. I guess I'll have to take it apart and clean it. I just thought that you had to pump these lanterns up every 20 to 30 minutes to keep them going.

The model 220E would go for 20 to 30 minutes then begin to pulse before going out.

How long should these Colemans go before needing to be repumped? What's the general consensus?

Mark, I think that 220E has an air leak somewhere. I'd pump it up and use some soapy water around the cap and the pump.

I love the big hat lanterns, BTW. I have 3 of them.

It reallty depends on the lantern. My milspec & 275 will run for 3-4 hours without pumping. My 200A will run an hour or 2.

It sound like to me you have an air leak in the fount. Try swaping the fuel cap first to see if it helps. It could also be in the valve packing or tip cleaner.

I'm also nuts for the Big Hats! Most of my lanterns burn for hours before they need pumping. All except my l#*@? 200A. Still can't get to burn for more than a few minutes.

Don't be cussing me out for that 200A, I got the same problem on one I'm redoing for Lori E. I've had it apart so many times I can do it blindfolded and it still won't run right!! Giving me fits!!

Amen Tom! Mine won't light at all now. I'm thinking that it might be the F&A spring is shot, I now have a donor. Just waiting for after christmas to start rebuilding a few lanterns.

Nice-looking lanterns, Mark!

As for losing pressure, it could also be the fuel valve packing.

I have three 200As... the first is a cosmetically-cherry '62 that I need to take apart to stretch the FA spring and perhaps examine the FA tube for deposits but it runs nicely once started and never requires a re-pump.

My second, a '56, is one I reassembled w/o thread sealant at the fount bung. It does need a re-pump, 10 strokes every 30 mins or so. Could also be that I don't have the correct fuel cap gasket.

My third, and the one that's the most weathered and cost the least to purchase is the one that runs the strongest and brightest forever until it runs the fount dry. I have disassembled it also and didn't use thread sealant either. This is another '62 and because it shows such heart it's becoming my favorite.

I have yet to brush any fittings w/ soapy water on the other two.

Waiting on a couple of parts to get my recently-acquired '33 242 running!
