Are Coleman Mantles Better?

Postby campmaster-k » Sun Oct 23, 2011 3:56 pm

Are Coleman Mantles better than other brands. And what is the story on Coghlan's. All the packages look like Coleman but not.

Im not a big Walmart shopper, in fact I really dont like to go in there but I was in need of white gas and mantles and its it Sunday so I had to. So I thought I would share the fact that Coleman Mantles are $2 for the 4 pack of string ties. Just sayin. 8)

MMMM....old school Coleman lanterns...now with 25% more thorium...."it takes a lickin', keeps a geiger counter tickin". Kidding aside...there is a whole world of mantle info out there, gold bands, silk lites yada yada yada....I'm not that much of a nut about it. If I find mantles at the thrift store or at a garage sale...those ones are just great for me.

Some of the older mantles were supposed to have a minor amount of radioactivity in them, but I can't imagine it's nearly as bad as all those radium dials we used to have on watches.

My preferred mantle...Coleman 99's Doug

What are mantles made out of. I have seen reference to silk, are they silk?

Thanks Doug. Mantles are complicated. I had no idea. I guess I will stop using them for flow through tea bags.
