Way back in the olden days when I started collecting lanterns ( what was that about three or four weeks ago) I saw some one do a Frank. So I have been collecting parts to do my own HOT ROD Lantern. It will start with this 51 228 basket case.

The fount is rusty on the outside but amazingly clean and nice on the inside. Pump and check valve are clean and working. No dents.

Not sure about the color yet.

I chickened out on the cool weird color, I went with Coleman Green baby! I took a hat to a auto paint store and had them make some real paint. I have a machina so I can custom fill spray cans with any paint, so it was real simple to proceed. From rust bucket to beautiful. Its not perfect but pretty close. 8)

New problem. The big hat burner is taller than the others to accommodate the taller, cooler hat. I was going to use the upper part of the burner because it is intact, however the doner burner is not co-operating. So to proceed with Frankie Im going small hat. I know Iknow its tragic but it must be. I told you in the beginning that this might get ugly.

Nice job on that one....don't worry about what color you do something up in. Some people on the Coleman board can't believe how I use different colors on some of my stuff. It's not like it's a Faberge egg after all!

If it's a hard to find nice old stove or lantern...I do them up original. If it's just "another" 413/425/220....do it how you want. I've done stoves in green/gray, red, aqua, as well as the original colors. I paint up stuff to match trailers. Doug

Kirk....just a tip from someone that has been down your path. If you are going to do a repaint on a lantern, I'd just tear it down all the way and pull the F/A tube and do the whole clean/resto thing on it and really clean it out, you'll know exactly what you are working with after that.

It's just an easy thing to do and you won't run the chance of damaging a good paint job/decal on it trying to get it apart if it has crud in it. I have a tapered dowel that I thread in the valve body threads so it's like a handle to paint with. An old tire valve stem works great to plug the pump tube.

I've done a number of them thinking....it's all clean inside....only to have to redo what I'd done since I marked it up working on it, as it wasn't as clean as I thought or had an issue. Just what I've experienced.

Not trying to give you a bad time...it's just stuff I've learned. What you've done looks great! Doug

Doug no need to tread lightly. You know that is the right thing to do. I thought about that before I painted but I was LAZY. I just wanted to see the new GREEN. Thanks for the input. Your thoughts are always welcome.
