So whats the story on kerosene lanterns. How are they different . I dont see many around.

I have a couple of Dietz Juniors. They give off a nice soft glow for chatting around the campsite. Use charcoal lighter fluid in them instead of kerosene. No odor!

I don't collect them (just have 2). That's what Colemans are for!!

A Kerosene light is wick fed from a reservoir. Aladdin's put out a good bit of light. They are not as clean burning as Naptha/Coleman and good ones such as the Aladdin do NOT come cheap.

I've got one of the $4.00 red hurricane type kerosene lanterns from Walmart. If you tip it, it leaks oil from the reservoir, which makes it difficult to actually transport anywhere. Gives off a nice warm light, though. Get what ya' pay for. I have it hanging from a nail in my garage now.

you can do like bob henry. just drill holes in them and put in some electrical wires and convert the walmart kerson lanterns to a 12 volt one for your teardrop or 120 for when you have shore power.

of course this is out to in a storm other than if you have what I am thinking of putting in the house a 12 volt back up sytem compleate with deep cyle batteris rv lights and a home made wind turbine. and a few solar panels.


my neigbor up the road has such a sytem in his house all home made.

Actually, I misspoke, its the one I bought a few years ago from Big Lots that leaked, if I remember right, it was at the base of the tube where you add oil, where it was welded to the base.

Yes I have see the wick lamps but im talking about the Lanterns that are pressure kerosene. They are Coleman and look just like the white gas ones but they say Kerosene on them.

The two primary differences in pressure kero lanterns are the generator and that the gen has to be pre-heated to help the initial lighting. Not as popular these days but still available new. The 639B is a very bright lantern.
I run some of mine on kero for grins. Fuel is half the price. And they put out lots of heat.

I've got a number of Aladdins and several wick type lamps. Watch out for the Aladdins. You really need to adjust them "just so". After you get them all dialed in and running great...it's not uncommon for them to "soot" up a mantle and next thing you know...you got a dark spot on the ceiling, maybe one reason they used to have such high ceilings. It's kind of a badge of honor to get the black spot if you're into them.

When you light them, the chimney must be in position before you adjust the wick under the mantel. It needs the air flow to burn correctly. Don't use the scented oils....just straight lamp oil.

My favorite...the wall mount jadite bodied one with the white milk glass shade. Just another thing to be interested in....and the beauty of them is....you can get a body easily, and piece together the rest of the parts. Lots of aftermarket stuff available. Like with Coleman stuff....search and find...don't get carried away with it and pay top dollar....Doug
