Forgive me Coleman for I have sinned. w/pics

Postby campmaster-k » Wed Nov 09, 2011 7:09 pm

I was struck by temptation. I am only human. The temptress was a Western Field Lantern (I think its made by Thermos). DANG. It was just one. Oh yea and just one Kamp Kook stove. It is a 3 burner, how could I resist? It is missing the tank but you cant have everything, right?

So to keep tables even and show that I have not defected I got these.

A new leather plunger seal and tank gasket. Two new mantles and some magic Coleman fuel. This is what I got. Fire.

Image

This lantern is a super old 228 and its burning again. Can I have a HALLELUJAH. I say Amen to that my brothers and sisters.

I also got this little fella. Its a 59 and lookin smokin hot.

Image

I also scored a new funnel at the boot fair, but alas no picture.

Please forgive my indiscretions.

And so it is and has been with other hobbies of mine, I always try to move into the house when its cold. Nobody wants to work on cool toys in the garage when you can take a pile of your stuff into the house. So two days ago I just set the new Thermos Lantern in the entry way to see if it gets kicked to the garage by my wife. It has not yet been excommunicated so maybe I am thinking I will try to take it apart in the kitchen. What are my chances? Anyone with experience? :o

Now here's my problem Guys: As an advanced purveyor of Coleman collectibles, my spouse suddenly gained an interest in earthen crock and moonshine jugs. Now when an open spot comes open in the homestead - I have to rush to fill it with one of my colemans or risk the spot to be filled by one of her goods.

OK OK I think we may just possibly venturing into hording territory Starleen  when you can't share. I will admit we're at an age now where we're trying to get rid of stuff not accumulate more (not always successful). At this point in our life our goal is to collect memories, not things.
When our kids were growing up and our resources Limited we spent them on experiences and a number of those involved camping, truly intents using the 60+ YO Coleman when entering and Preway stove that my parents gave us. So play nicely together, and share!

Kevin - Its hard to tell the year. The bottom of the fount is obscured with what seems to be galvanizing or something. Its not easy to read. The cool part of the story is that the lantern in the pic is one of triplets. My brother (who is a recent convert to Colemanism) has been picking like crazy. He saw an ad on Craigs list that said three lanterns left over from yard sale. So we called and the guy said he did not know anything about the lanterns. The only thing he know was that they were the pump up kind and he wanted 25 for all three. So we said we would be right over. Two are 228b in the 30's one is a 41. Hunting Coleman in the wild is good stuff. 8)

When I came home last night I tried to sneak into the garage, I was carrying two lanterns and the stuff I needed to make the 228 work. I thought if she saw me with the Coleman stuff she would be reminded of the lantern in the house and kick it out. She caught me just as I got to the garage and said, "You forgot the one in the house I will go get it for you". I will try again soon. 8)

Kirk....just a sidebar to your recent infatuation....get an education on globes. Many times...a beater lantern can have a very valuable globe on it. Sometimes the sum of the parts is much greater than the asking price of the item. Globes...they aren't always a ball on a funky stand that you can spin real fast! I can tell you're learning, cuz you took a pic of that one. Doug

. . . and while we're on the subject of Globes -
1. you might want to store your rare globes in the cabinet so they won't get broke and use a "el cheapo" substitution when you use the lanterns. It only takes once to hear the crack and you'll know EXACTLY what I mean.
2. Also place the globe on another table wrapped in a towel when your're rebuilding a lantern to keep it from rolling off and dropping to the floor - don't ask how I learned this lesson (see comment 1)

Thank you that is good advice. The glass has become a whole collection on it own. My brother did exactly what you said, globe on same table, CRASH. It was a cool sunshine one.
