Hot Plate Photos

Postby 46Kit » Sat Dec 10, 2011 9:43 pm

Finally got around to taking a few pics of my recently acquired Coleman hot plates.

First up is the Model 395 that I scored on eBay back in July, just a week or two after I got my teardrop. Didn't receive it until October when a friend from Seattle brought it down to help me save a few bucks on shipping. Have not tried to fire this one up yet, but looks like everything is there and with a little clean up should be a burner! Unfortunately the housing is in sort of rough shape and will require a fair bit of bodywork repair. It's actually a little too large for the galley on our '46 Kit, but I found some really cool lock-in/lock-out drawer slides that will allow it to be tucked away for storage and transport, but be pulled out and mostly overhanging off the galley counter top for cooking. I'm really looking forward to getting this super-deluxe 3-burner stove with all cast iron innards restored back to pristine condition!

Then back in late October on eBay along came this 2-burner Model 391A hot plate. Since the 395 needs lots of work and some specialized hardware to be mounted in our camper figured I'd just throw a bid on it and see what happened. Much to my surprise (and a bit to my chagrin because funds are a little tight at the moment...) nobody tried to take it away from me and I got it for the opening bid! Seller said it was in working condition so I just removed the discs and put some high-pressure air through the manifold to make sure there were no cobwebs lurking and it fired right up, yippee! Looks like there was a fire on the main burner because the paint is all burned away on that side. The top was also pretty heavily warped because I suspect water was thrown on it to put out the fire and this had the side effect of shrinking the hot metal. Yesterday got out my body hammers and dollies and with some judicious tapping was able to stretch the metal and relax the warp in the top so now it lays flat, bully for me! Planning to camp out in the teardrop over Christmas, but after that I will send the top off to IPE for a coat of porcelain enamel, which is not the original finish, but I think it will look better and should be more durable.

BTW: the grates on the 391A are lengths of 1/4" steel rod welded together and at this point they are just bare steel. Anybody know definitively what type of finish Coleman originally used to keep them from rusting?

Great hot plates! That 395 can handle some big pots!....I don't know what Coleman used at the time as the VHT paints weren't available...Since all the old stoves I find are always rusty on the grates and there is absolutely no remains of any sort of coating, I'm betting that it was just raw steel. Some people do the cast iron seasoning thing on them...but it just burns off first time you fire it up and then they are a rust magnet. I'd shoot them with Rustoleum in either the flat black or silver BBQ paint...holds up to 1200F heat.

Yeah...the 3 burner is a bit large for a typical tear galley, but it's a great stove anyway! And, if you just can't live with it...I would be more than willing to give it a great home....

I think it's worth it on them to get them re-done from IPE with the porcelain....but that's just me.

Can you get a really good close up on the information on the fuel tank and an overall dimension on the size of the decal? I really need that info to reproduce some decals. Thanks in advance. Doug

Great cabin stoves you have there! I have a 395 I got from 48Rob. It has a flared fitting on the bottom of the fuel valve. I believe someone has used it with a hollow wire system. If I hook it up to a remote pressure tank I could use it that way also as long as it is preheated. If anyone see's a font for one of these please let me know!

Mark....check the tab distance on the fount....I've found that on my 371, that a 3H will fit perfectly in it, and the 413's will also fit both. Generator diameter may vary, but the will fire up and run fine. A lot of this stuff is interchangeable. Doug

Wow, nice hot plates. You just keep buying them all up. I don't need anything else to collect.

Doug,

This guy is already reproducing the hot plate decal for you:

Lemme know if you want a closeup photo anyway...

PS -- Randy, I have stopped looking at eBay since I got the 391A, I can't afford to find any more treasure for the moment!

Very nice finds Harley!
I've been lurking on ebay looking for one of those three burners myself. I'm sure one will show up in my price range sooner or later.
Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind? Ask yourself these simple questions every time you are in doubt about any action.

Doug, first of all I noticed That the font is reverse of all the other stoves in regaurd to which end the valve assembly is on. This makes the mounting tabs on the wrong side of the tank for most. Also look close at the 2 stoves HW posted, the distance from the left end of the font to the fitting are different on those. It seems that the 395 is a one only on the font design.

Yeah, Dave. I work on old British and Italian motorcycles and those are my motorcycle lifts from Handy Industries. They make a good surface for working on other stuff, too!
