Two Questions for the Coleman Keepers

Postby Woodbutcher » Thu Dec 15, 2011 1:29 pm

A camping friend has sent me 2 Sears lanterns and a Turd to rebuild. I have never done a Sears lantern before. I found that some guys use Chrysler engine Blue by Duplicolor. Does that seem right or do you guys know a better match? Also 1 of these lanterns is a Bighat model with a perfect Blue Vent. Never seen a blue vent before. Also the bail handle was painted red and it seemed original. I've also never seen a red handle. Do you think that is correct?
Lastly one has a rusty cage. What kind of paint do I need for that. Does it have to be the high heat stuff or does the globe offer enough protection that I can use Rustolieum?
Any help is appreciated.

Yes - there are 2 different Dupli-color Chrysler blues. You want the lighter one.

Blue vent is correct for one model. There was also a green one with a green vent.

The red bail is not original. Should be bare metal.

Rustly cage - soak in CLR - rinse - 0000 steel wool - clear coat it or high-temp silver.

The Rustoleum hi temp silver is great stuff but it also looks good. I put it on anything that was rusty just because its looks nice and will keep it from further rust.

I wish they were mine! They belong to a camping friend. I'm just rebuilding them, then back they go.
