Did Someone here get this?

Postby IndyTom » Sun Jan 08, 2012 8:35 pm

I found this http://indianapolis.craigslist.org/tls/2788774466.html on Craigslist. Since you guys have infected me, I have been on the lookout for this stuff for sometime. I knew immediately that I would hate myself for missing it so I sent the guy a text as soon as I saw it last night. Then as soon as I could today I called and it was already sold. Never even got a reply to my text.

I was hoping that it was someone here that made the score.

Tom that appears to be a 520. I could only have wished to be quick enough to get that. If it really was a 520 a trip to Indy would have been in order!

Tell me about it. I was in a foul mood for over an hour after I found out I had missed that one. And of course, the wife had no idea why such a thing would be upsetting. When I talked to the guy, he told me that he had told his son to put it on Craigslist to "get the thing out of here". Oh well, one day it will be me that wins.

Isn't that the truth!!

And I had to discover gold bond items by accident a few days ago...and I thought a 275 was bad enough.

It's a disease, I tell you, a disease!! I find myself daydreaming about lanterns while at work...thinking about cooking dinner on a 502...I can't help it...it must be the white gas fumes...

In Nov I stumbled on to a 530 at an estate sale for $6. It is in fine condition and was in an olive drab canvas bag that I have never seen in any Fleabay sale. I grabbed that stove and once again made a mad dash to pay for it. I usually run over 2 or 3 people in my "Coleman" dashes.

I've done that with other things...grab and go before anyone realizes that the item should have sold for way more. I've ticked a few people off rushing through the estate sale to get to the counter to pay...but before someone discovers they let something get away, you gotta get out of there!

Look on CL...they used to be in the classifieds of the newspaper. Look there too.

You gotta get there earlier than the posted time. Get in line at the door. Mostly antique dealers there at that time. Hang out, get ready to move in on the kill, look quickly and grab what you want the minute you see it. You can cast it back later if you change your mind. Take cash. Stuff won't be as cheap as a yard sale, but you still find deals, especially if the estate company handling the sale isn't into that kind of item.

This is really a time not to advertise that you collect. If they think you may fix it up and turn it, they will charge you more. They want a piece of the action. See if you can befriend your local estate dealers so you can get a heads up on the next sales..if it's all 'ladies stuff' and not to bother, or if they have an estate from a real outdoorsman.

Now I've given away my estate sale secrets. One more...don't ask the 'head person' about the price. Ask one of the helpers. They often don't know as much and will give you a deal. I got an item that should have gone for $150-200 for $15. Awesome deal!

Good luck! You are sure to pick up some good Coleman, etc! Just don't show your Colors!! Leave the CRV in the car...with a blanket over it!

This here is a rather small area and the estate sales are listed in the local free paper. The people that does about 90%+ of them here are friends of mine and they also have an email they send out. But I refuse to use my friend ship to get a "jump" on other people. I wait in line for the opening. It really ticks me off when I get in there and so often things like appliances, old furniture and such already have "Sold" on them. I have never asked them about that. If it was the deceased's kids or other relatives/close friends I would be fine with that. But not just somebody that hit them up the day or two before the sale. Thats not good. Now trampling other people that get in your way to pay for something. That is ok in my book.

I never got a jump on people that way...just heard of sales coming up in a week or so that would have things I was interested in.

I never bought anything before the sale...that was specifically for dealers. I got out there and waited in line for half an hour or so before the opening. Tried to get first in line, but usually didn't. And yeah, dealers were allowed in the day before to buy the best stuff. Irritating.

But with a heads up on what was stuff I would like and what wasn't helped me plan on doing something else when the estate company was holding a sale of stuff like a house full of dolls.

At the huge antique mart in Alameda, CA I didn't go in before the 8 am price break..I drove 100 miles to get there at 7:15 to wait in line for 45 minutes for the price break. Usually first in line, saw lots of stuff coming out with dealers, but there was way more stuff to be had inside. I always try to get the fixer upper stuff..it's a deal, since the dealers don't want to do the fixing!

I don't think enough people die here to have estate sales. Just saying?

I'm in the Roseville/Sacramento area now...plenty of folks going to the 'rest home' (what does THAT mean, anyway??) or, well, buying the farm. But if you ask the estate folks, they will always tell you the person moved to assisted living. Because some people get spooked by buying a deceased person's belongings.

I say it's recycling.

Take a look at CL in your area, or prepare to make a trip over here for a sale first, bootfair after.

So Colusa is where the Fountain of Youth is located, huh??? I'll have to ask my friend about that when he gets back from his deployment...he grew up there.
