Transporting lanterns...home built lantern cases??

Postby DragonFire » Thu Jan 12, 2012 12:46 am

OK, there is a thread on dong a burn at IRG. There are people here with multiple lanterns attempting to move them for a record breaking burn. So how do you do it? Do you have cases for each lantern, year appropriate?

Do you build your own lantern cases?

Ebay addict?

Use old socks?

I need ideas. My collection is small enough I could buy cases for them, but I want to know what else is possible. Lazybones just gout some milspec lanterns and one case was empty..made me think there could be cases that could fit several lanterns...maybe something that wasn't made for lanterns, but works anyway...or something that can be built for the Coleman collection (yeah, here is the case for my gold bonds, Here is one for the common 200 lanterns I own, Here is a case for all my 275's, In here I have milspecs.....)

So give me some ideas. I've gotta think of something besides finding a gold bond in the wild, since it's more elusive than the Waffle Dog Iron.

Look on ebay for lanterm cases and you will find some. Doug has made himself some beautiful wooden ones. many just wrap them with towels and put them in rubbermade tubs.

where is the irg burn thread?
Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind? Ask yourself these simple questions every time you are in doubt about any action.

I'm cheap and use a couple of old plastic milk crates lined and seperated by cardboard. I use one for my 3 lanterns and just a second crate with the coleman fuel and propane bottles.

Use a cardboard box and make some cardboard dividers for it....building cases is a lot of weight and will take up a lot of real estate and time to build it. No real point in building a case unless you plan on hauling them all around with you all the time. Doug

That is a good Idea Gary. Build cases out of sheet foam.

The first lantern I got came with a home made case that is pretty good so I can haul a 220E and earlier in it. But as doug said it takes up a whole lot of real estate and weight. For a 200A I have a Coleman plastic case, one where the top slips over the lantern and snaps to the bottom. That one does not take up much more space and weighs very little. I can even put an alcohol bottle in there if I am taking my kerosene conversion.

For my "special" lanterns I plan on building a "Presentation" case. Will probably end up very large and heavy.

The card board box with dividers sounds like a good idea for lanterns that are not to special. The big hats might be hard to transport no matter what. I have had good luck just wrapping lanterns up in blanket/towel/what ever and laying it on the floor where nothing can fall on them. Carry extra mantels but I have yet to break one, doing anything. They are stronger than one is led to believe.

How about cutting one of those heavy cardboard tubs they use for concrete forms. Cut it to length and make a plywood circle for the bottom. A rope handle and your all done.

For more security an ammo box will hold a pair of 200A's with some room to spare, for fuel , funnel and parts. Sorry I can't remember the caliber of shells it held. If anyone wants to know I can measure mine on Monday.

This is an excellent idea! So now the question is, will the standard size tubes be a good diameter fit for the lanterns.

Here's what I did with some leftover marine grade mahogany. More of a display type case than really "hauling" them in. They still take up a lot of turf. I can nest them into divided cardboard boxes rather than these cases when hauling a group much easier and move like 6 or 8 of them in 1 box. Sorry, but I just can't do the molded plastic thing, looks like..........molded plastic. The prices on the cases also are kinda stupid I think. All the cases that I've gotten whether it be the steel or the plastic ones for the 220-228's I've given away. Doug

Doug, such a show off! Very nice indeed! If you can make a few dozen of those green cases, you could support your habit. How many could you make before IRG?

I like using 5-gal. buckets for hauling the "big hat" lanterns in. Drape an old bath towel over the lantern, grab the top of the vent (towel and all) and sit in the bucket. There's a little slop after it's in there but not too much. The lanterns with smaller vents, I'll use two towels. I don't normally bring any more than one lantern on a trip so it's not like I need a whole bunch of buckets. Besides, when the bucket isn't being used for hauling lanterns, you can use it to water the dogs..... 8) 8) 8)

Jeff

P.S. I REALLY like Hodder's boxes but if I made something like that, I'd have to make something to hold the case so it wouldn't get messed up   .......

So.... Woodbutcher came up with an idea, and.... today I made this quick carrier for the only gas lantern I currently had, 220K. I will add vinyl tubing around the top lip to get the edging a little neater. I like it because it was cheap, and it can go through a few knocks and still protect my now growing collection.

Before this paint dried on this tube, I ended up with these this afternoon! So now I have to make more carriers. 200A's: 1963, and 1973
