Sad Use of a Coleman Lantern

Postby Kevin & Sandy » Sat Jan 14, 2012 12:53 pm

This is about our 12 year old German Shorthair Pointer, Holly. I bought her for my son when he was 13 because he was/is such a hunting nut. I had thought that my son did not have the patience to train a dog, but he did a wonderful job of training Holly.

She became a great companion and an excellent hunter, holding points, retrieving, she did it all. She would work all day for a pat on the head. Best dog we ever had.
She died last evening and we were all heart broken. My son had to leave town later that evening so we had no choice but to load up Hollydog and prepare to bury her on some family hunting ground where we have had lots of good times and Holly had pointed and retrieved many, many quail and pheasants.

It may seem strange to go out at night and do this but circumstances dictated it. I would have preferred daytime but my son had to leave and had promised Holly he would do this himself. We arrived at the field and I lit a couple lanterns so we could see what we were doing and got to work. It was sad to say goodbye after all those years. She will be missed.

Here is Kalen and Holly during their first hunting season.

They become such a big part of the family it's hard when they pass. From the look of the photo he had a wonderfull and well loved life. I don't think he could have asked for more.........sorry

Sorry to here about the loss of your beloved dog.
Like crazy4kits said. They are part of the family and just as hard to lose.
Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind? Ask yourself these simple questions every time you are in doubt about any action.

Very sorry to hear about your dog...sounds like she had the best life a dog could have, though.

The sad part about having animal companions is that they go before we do for the most part. It's never easy.

Very sorry for your family's loss. You gave Holly the best. That is all that matters. You couldn't have done more.

Take care.

Having lost my camping buddy a couple of years ago, I can relate to the pain you are having. While it's a sad use for a lantern, it's very fitting since it's a common practice to light a lantern in memory of those that are gone or are not doing well. It's sort of a "white gas" prayer. It's done regularly on the Coleman board. Doug

So Sorry to hear about Holly. We get so much more from our pets then they do from us. They require so little. Just feed um and love um and hope they have a long life. Sometimes it's just not long enough.

sorry about the loss of your friend...memories can live on forever

where reality runs a razor thin seam between fact and possibility;

Anywhere I roam where I lay my head is home....

It seems a shame that dogs live such a short life. The only way I know of to feel comforted is to remember that you gave Holly a good and happy life and lots of love. Please accept my condolences on the loss of your family member, friend, and love.

Very sorry for your loss. Pets have a special place in the world of unconditional love.

Our family had a cat that passed about a year ago. The cat was a rescue cat, temperamental and had trouble with relationships. We only got to pet her once in a while without getting whacked. We still miss her.

I got the marker done last night. I had never done anything like this before but I thought I would surprise my son with this because he was wondering what we could make.

I will get a couple coats of Helmsman urethane on it, then it should be ready. I drilled two holes in the bottom and installed some steel rods to mount it. Then I realize it is 2012 !! D'oh !! This will still work.

That is the brass from a 12 ga shell on top. The shape is such that we can hang her collar on it. It will be in the middle of a large patch of 3-5 foot tall grass, I better put a post beside it, just in case (of trespassers driving thru the grass and smacking it).
