Camping gear raid!

Postby cuyeda » Sat Jan 28, 2012 12:51 am

I just raided my dad's garage of the camping gear we used when I was a kid. My dad won't be going camping anymore, and gladly allowed me to go through the garages. These are just the ones I could find in the open. There may be more, including a 3 burner stove somewhere.

Adding to the new collection are the ones in front. The two red lanterns, and 200K in the back I just acquired recently. The stove is a 413E, adding to the two stoves I already have. This stuff multiplies quickly!

Now I have my work cut out for me to go through each one.

Nice group to have, and what's especially nice are the ones that have some family history to them. I've got the family 413E that cooked my first fish...we used it all the time, camping in the '57 Ford station wagon and the tent.

I knew that I always wanted that stove and fortunately it wasn't given away when we got a trailer....I'll never restore it...still runs like a champ...and all my family members have had eats off it!

It might sound corny to some people...but that's the kind of thing that means something to me....I'm the caretaker of the family camping stove! Doug

I told my dad, that once I get the gear tuned up, I would share it back if he wanted, or share with my other brothers. I don't need all of it, but I get hooked into wanting to try and bring em' back to life. Especially with all the experience, and resources around here.

Just think... It all started with the call to the IRG 4.0 light off. I could blame all of you folks here having all this work now, haha, but I will have fun doing it.

Just think Doug, I could have had 200+ lanterns for $10 each, instant collection (inside story), glad I didn't go for it. This is much more fun raiding dad's garage!

I think I spy a 5120 on the far right that uses propane canisters, does it have a mint green vent or is it just dusty? Good score, Cliff!!

Excellent, instant collection Cliff. I guess there is no going back now. I feel the same as Doug about the family camping stuff. When the whole family gets together we often talk of the old vacations we took. Not having much money ,they were all camping trips. But we saw the whole country from the back seat of a 1963 Chevy station wagon. So still having our old gear reminds me of those days and has a lot to do with who I am today. My bet is it does the same for many of us on this board.
Have fun getting them to run, and post a few pictures along the way! :applause:

Cliff..your family sure had a lot of lanterns!! Glad your Dad let you have them..it will bring back lots of good memories as you get them fired up again..nice stove, too!

All of my Dad's camping gear went to his brother when he died, and who knows where it is now. I'd love to get it back if it is in storage here in town, since my uncle moved here. Instead I need to get over and get Mom's stove and lantern before my brother grabs it...he seems to think it's his, or at least he's entitled to it. Silly, since Mom is here and will be camping with me in the Grasshopper!

Have fun cleaning up the old stuff and post pictures of the stuff when it's all cleaned up. I bet you won't have much to do to get it all up and running again! What a great score!

I propose a lighting at your next family event!

Jeff, It is a 5122, 4-1970. I wonder if the propane cans that fit the unit are still available. Not sure if the white vent is original, and missing the bail handle, but it is what it is, a conversation piece.

No, they were outlawed back in the early 70's, if I remember right. The canisters were like the little R-12 canisters of today. Once you poked the top, it was going to spew until it was empty. Take one out while the mantles were lit........ BOOM, big a$$ fireball!!
