Less Popular Kerosene Lanterns?

Postby cuyeda » Thu Feb 02, 2012 11:31 am

Do any of you collect the less popular kerosene lanterns? I only have three, and seen a few that has bit the rust dust that my dad has thrown away. Just curious if any of you collects these.

A Google link for examples.

I have a couple of Old Dietz lanterns but found that people want more for them used than a more desirable Coleman.

Here is one of mine, (on the right, of course) got this from my father-in-law. He said he bought it in the 50's to do chores with when he first moved to the farm, but everytime the Ayrshire cow saw the thing, she would try to run you over!
It looked terrible, but I cleaned it all up, put in a new wick, gave it a light coat of linseed oil to protect the finish, or whats left of it. (I guess you would call that patina now, huh?

Works like a champ. He said once I had it lit, to shut off all the lights in the house at night and see how bright it is with the lantern lit. It is not very bright at all, compared to the lights in our kitchen nowadays. Then he said that used to be the only kind of light they had, and doing homework at night was a real chore, you could hardly see your paper! (Let alone the keys on your laptop!)

It is a Montgomery Wards. It says "Wards Better Lantern" on the back.

I bought another and thought about collecting them, but I have enough stuff around the house and for sure enough lanterns, besides this one is special, and the others I would "collect" would not mean as much to me.

After posting this, I was surfing around craigslist, and some of these lanterns are priced very high. Perhaps like anything in a collection, there are some that are a dime a dozen, then there ones that are very collectible. Glad the Coleman lanterns can be found for reasonable prices.

We have a Deitz similar to Kevin & Sandy my Dad got during WWII. He always used it at hunting camp around the horses. Coleman lanterns were too bright and blinded the horses.
Two miners carbide lamps, one from early 1900's and a 1970's version also.

That's why they made the red globes for the Colemans...It also worked on humans so that they weren't "night blind" when they went away from the illuminated area.

I've got a vintage RR lantern from NY Central line and some other unlabeled ones, but are basically beaters...maybe 5 mine safety lanterns, mostly Euro types, and a variety of wick lanterns and Aladdins in the house. glass bases, shades.

The Deitz lanterns that I have are newer, and I put citronella oil in them to keep bugs away on the patio. Since the Deitz type weren't pressurized, they were made of a thinner material and consequently, were likely to rust out much quicker, as they didn't have a rubber seal on the fillers or wick so water could get in and rot them out quicker. You can get brand new Dietz (china manufacture though) lanterns through Lehmans for way less than most people try to sell them for used. They even have red globes for them. Most are less than $20 and the red globes are $6.
