New acquisition

Postby Joamon » Sat Feb 18, 2012 8:01 pm

Today I drove a long way to pick up this stove, but I made a day of it and went to a flea market and picked up a 220e 1961 big hat lantern also.
First pic is one I pulled off another web site.

The second two pics are the one I bought today.

The price was right and all the valves and wheels move freely.

It looks dirty/ abused and a bit rusty, but at least it's not bent up. Round corners are tough to take care of. That will clean up and be a great stove. What's great about this stuff, is that there are a lot of people that will shy away from a stove that looks like that, cuz they don't want to do the work. I'm sure that's why I got the model 1 I did. Take your time, do it right, don't cut a corner and it'll be a beautiful stove. Good find! Check the sticker on the left wing closely to see if you can read the copy....looks rough. Rainjer can make a new decal for it. Doug

that's cool....looks nice..just dirty. Copper, huh?? That could go with the Grasshopper..I need to look into those stoves...

Why is your tank red? Is that original for your year? Or does anyone really know? Or is the first picture of a rebuilt one with the incorrect paint?

I like it all copper. But it would look sharp with the red tank, too. Can't wait to see this one after restoration...shouldn't take long, just a bit of elbow grease!!

Keith...just a tip on the copper. If you do spray it that color and choose to use the rattle cans, make sure you clear coat it. The light metallic paints like copper, silver, and gold, don't like fingerprints on them afterwards and typically are pretty touchy on clean up on a stove. A hammered copper will have a glossing agent in it that will provide better protection. Just my opinion. Doug

PS...that stove has a really wild handle latch system.

Yes I am sure I will be using rattle cans but not sure about what color yet. Do I need to use high heat on the box? Kinda limits the colors. I'll find something and I may leave the tank alone. Not sure. Plenty of time to think about it.( read other thread about too many projects) The pics I saw before I bought it made it look silver so I was kinda thinking silver, it's really an off white color. Not sure if thas original or not. Yes that hadle system is neat how it works. I thought this was gonna be aluminum and light weight, but it's steel and heavy.

Regular rattle can paint should hold up to the temps, I've got several of them done out of a rattle can. Typically the boxes don't get all that hot. A large pan is what throws the heat out and scorches the sides, that and closing it up when its way too hot. The manifold will need to be in a high temp paint though. Doug

Nice stove. I like those AGMs I have 2 of that type/vintage. The have different generators. One is like yours, a straight pipe. The other has a big honking pipe just over the burner. Then there is the "other one" of a different vintage.

That one goes to a bit latter stove that the case looks to be a knock off of the early 425 Colemans. But it does work. With the AGMs I get to cook on the "left" side.
