Where do I start, coleman resto/refurb?

Postby Aaron Coffee » Tue Mar 13, 2012 9:09 pm

Haven't called on the Kampkook, might call towards this weekend, if I get it for my offer so be it, decided that maybe I should start out restore or refurbishing my Coleman stuff(parts more easily available)my question is where do I start. My thought is to see if I can get them to light and go from there. Oh I have a 1970 200, and a 55 (don't remember model no.)2 mantle, two stoves (oops, again don't remember model no.s)think they are both 2 burner. Would I be disowned if I painted one of the stoves(probably whichever is least desirable)red to match the 200 and the top of teardrop #2. Here are the lanterns

Thanks

I plan to paint some stoves custom colors. I have not done it yet but I will this summer. Just have with it there is no "right way". I always think of what Doug says about painting Coleman stuff ---" Paint it whatever color you want , these things are not Faberge' eggs!"

There is a guy selling old 425's on ebay that he is putting camo on. I dont like it but somebody does.

OH hey Aaron - In your pic there is a 228 big hat with a amber globe. Be very careful with that lantern. It is know to explode particularly because of that strange colored glass. The best thing to do is take the glass out and send it to me. I will put it up on a shelf, high up, where no person will ever get hurt by it. If you do that then I think it will be ok the use the lantern.

I don't bother to get them running until I put them back together after the restoration. Seems like a lot of unnecessary work if you are going to take it all apart and clean it up anyway. As far as color. I'd only be authentic on the really old stuff that is harder to come by. Something like a 425 or 413 is just a stove to play with and do up how you want. I'm drawing up a custom paint job for one right now. Doug

It's always nice to know if they will work or or not, but the problem with lighting a lantern before a restore is you may suck up some trash into the generator and you will waist a good pair of mantles when you do your tear down.

Here are the numbers, 200a dated 5-70, 228F dated 3-55, 425E dated 6-76, 413G no date. Fiddled with them only one cap seems to hold pressure, the stoves both pressure up and light but burn a big orange flame unless I light the second burner. The 228 holds pressure and lights but doesn't seem to be any adjustment, the 200a won't hold pressure, tried all four caps and a different pump.
As far as the amber globe, its a family heirloom, I remember as a kid, someone broke the globe (it was one of my brothers, honest!) We searched high and low and couldn't find a replacement, finally we checked and old seed, feed/hardware store and found this one.
Thanks

Old cap gaskets are hard as a rock. Get new ones at old colemanparts.com. do bb treatment and rinse thoroughly . Should get you on right track.

Got all the parts for the 200, have it all tore down. A few questions can I sand blast the paint off of the fount, if all of the holes(pump, filler, valve hole, sealed well? Will any cola work or does it need to be Coke, and can I soak the entire frame in cola? RC cola was on sale for $1 for a 2 liter bottle. When you paint the frame do you paint the whole thing or do you tape off the air tube or does it matter?
Here is a tip...DO NOT stick your finger in the pump shaft unless you are sure that your finger is smaller than the shaft.

DO NOT USE SAND! It's way too aggressive....glass beads or walnut shells are much better. I stuff a cork or an old tire valve stem plug into the openings. I also have a tapered stick that threads into the valve threads on the top of the fuel tank as a holder stick when I paint. On a lantern fount, I just use some stripper to remove paint, 1 quick coat and it usually drops off in sheets. I also do a quick sand with something like a 320 prior to prime/paint. Did you take the entire lantern apart? If so, the cage frame can be painted in the VHT. The burner assembly can be polished if it's brass and bronze. Doug

Yep took it all the way down folowing the teardown in oldcoleman parts.
Just when I thought I have reinvented the wheel, i found out I didn't. went to the hardware store today and bought a piece of tube with 1/8 pipe thread to use as a handle when I paint it, also got a T to fit the other end of the tube to act as more of a handle and slip a piece of wire through to hang it to dry. Went to get paint for "old #7" yesterday but all of the paint stores aren't where they used to be, drove by 2 flea market stores and goodwill, I was awfully tempted to stop and see if they had any lanterns or stoves but I didn't.
Reel me in, I'm hooked.

IT LIVES, BAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
the 200A that is.

Here it is lit

There are a few flaws in the paint. And some chips in the top(the proper name evades me at the moment). Might get it redone next winter or might leave it as I might have caused the chips when I was a kid. I call this one my 3rd birthday lantern.
Hmm, what next?

Kind of thinking of getting the 425 running next (not a complete redo)it pumps up and spits fuel, everything looks fairly clean, haven't looked in tank yet, clean it up and touch up the rust spots, pull the manifold and evict any critters that may live there, clean tank and fuel pickup, and go from there. Camping season is soon approaching, so it would be nice to have something going other than my propane.
