My First Lantern - All Fired Up!!!

Postby Oldragbaggers » Fri Mar 16, 2012 8:04 pm

Tonight I was in my favorite local thrift store putting together my new spring wardrobe, and lo and behold, shoved to the back of one of the high shelves among all the electrical lamps was this.....

Coleman Model 220K lantern.

I am a regular patron of all the local auctions, flea markets and thrift stores (and a yard sale or two from time to time) but this is the first time I have ever come across a Coleman lantern. So of course I snapped it up, for the bargain basement price of $9.90. This is my first piece of Coleman gear. It looks like it's in pretty good shape to me.

But what the hell do I know. :NC

I hope this doesn't become another addiction. :)

That model lantern has been the Coleman basic workhorse for ever. You'll be able to get any part you need for it, easy to operate. Clean it up and enjoy! Welcome aboard! And unfortunately, it can be kind of addicting. I'll bet you will find another and if it's a different one...you'll go "that's cool, I don't have a red one" and drag it home as well. Doug

I plan to work on the teardrop as much as possible this weekend, but I'll try and find a little time to tinker with it and see if it lights.

And I need another addiction/obsession/collection like I need another hole in my head.

Now if I could only run into a Coleman stove.... I bought a propane counter top drop in stove early on in the build before I knew what I wanted. But I have since decided I don't want to use it, for all the good reasons you guys already know about.....so I am hoping to find a good bargain on a working Coleman stove and will sell the propane one on eBay or Craigslist.

Slowcowboy is right. Don't give up the profane. Ithas its place. I love the white gas, but I like propane also.

Slow...the reason I have decided not to use the propane is because it is a permanent drop in counter type and I have decided that I really don't want to cook inside the back of the tear and have the grease all over. I'm also not up to building fancy slide outs for it, although I have seen some really nice designs that would work well for me. I work so slowly that if I don't keep this simple, I will still be building it years from now. I'd rather start using it.

I'd rather sit the stove on a side table or a picnic table or someplace away from the teardrop. If I had a portable Coleman that would also make it useful for us during our very frequent power outages here, and could be taken boat camping as well. I'm all about dual purpose stuff.

Doug, I must have holes, because I find I keep losing stuff out of there over the years. If I don't get a good plug soon, it's going to be completely empty.

Lance went over the 220K this weekend and cleaned it all up. Filled it with fuel, tied on some new mantles and it fired right up. I'm going to be needing some MORE OF THESE!!!

A red one, a brown one, a big hat.....

now you want stoves too??? A single burner, a propane stove, a 3 burner...

You are hooked. But Colemans earn their keep. They are useful. They are camping equipment. Not just a 'look what I have" item. They are more of a 'look what is providing the light/heat/cooking we need..it's a vintage Coleman!"

And they aren't just useful for camping. Doug needs them when the power goes out in a storm...he's probably cooking on one right now!

And they really are works of art. Working works of art. And they have provided light and heat for other families during countless camping trips over the years..taken care of, Colemans will continue to provide you with wonderful memories too!
