IRG light up....one for the record books!

Postby doug hodder » Sun Jul 29, 2012 8:19 pm

It took a major effort by all involved but we managed to get 232 total lanterns lit which includes the propane/battery and wick types. We believe the number of white gas items to be 212. We are going to have to go to a final picture, that I believe either Cliff or Ron has to really do an exact count on them all. Major kudos to Lee that built some great stands for the display, and with the help of a newly downed tree to line a load of them on, it was a compact display. It was also incredibly HOT! Hot enough that I'm sure many created their own pressure so pumping wasn't necessary. Fortunately it went off without a hitch.

Big thanks to all of you that helped out with the lighting, organization, hauling lit ones, helping to light them etc....Lee, Jeremy, Dave, Kirk, Kevin, Shelly, Barb, Wolfgang and all others involved. The thing is when you do something like this, it's kinda like a plate spinner on Ed Sullivan. By the time you get them all up and going, 1 or 2 starts to fade or have an issue that needs to be tended to. The heat waves coming off the group when running was enormous. Thanks to everyone that contributed to the effort!!! Doug

Here's my pic...but more were added...I just didn't get the final pic, someone else please post one that is more complete.

Lees contribution.....Wow....lots of wild different items...

It's a sickness..but hey, it is a good sickness!! Lee has a really nice collection...a good array of lanterns. It was like looking at a lantern museum during the day..he had them out all weekend for people to look at. It was really cool. I saw lanterns I have never seen before. I thought I was only going to buy one more lantern (birthday lantern..) but now I'm not sure.

Yeah it got hot. I burned my fingers more than once trying to shut them down. I need to get some leather gloves like Kirk's. Especially if we do this as a regular feature at the IRG. Not that Lee needs to haul his collection every IRG, but there are enough campers that we can keep this going, not as a record breaker, but just as an event in itself..bring your white gas lantern and add it to the light up. If you just bring one, that is fine. It's the spirit of camping and fellowship that makes it fun. It brings us all together.

I'm bummed that I'm home in the Sacramento area and no camping for another 3-4 weeks, but the memories will last a lifetime. The lighting and the IRG were awesome.

Thanks Betsey....actually I started to flip out...so many lanterns, so much heat and so many people. Any accident would have put a dark note on the IRG and the light up. Without a great operating crew, things could have gone sour in a big hurry....like a nuclear meltdown type of thing.....Doug

14 hours and 640 miles I am home!!! I counted 204 in your picture Doug and I know we had an entire row white gas lanterns on the ground in front when we finished.

Looks like a great IRG and lightup.

The morning of 27-07-2012 my ICCC 20th anniversary lantern arrived.

Image

Here is is later that day burning with 19 of its stable mates.

Image

It is hanging above the others. 2nd from the left. In the lower left corner that big ball of white is my R5 Tilley.

Image

I had a total of 20 lanterns burning. 16 Coleman fuel and 4 Kerosene. 20 lanterns for the ICCC 20th anniversary Lantern.

I finished lighting them 9:04 pm Mountain Time Zone and left them burning for 1.5 hours.
