poptop advice?

Design & Construction of anything that's not a teardrop e.g. Grasshoppers or Sunspots

Postby jeepr » Sun Sep 30, 2007 8:44 pm

my parents pickup camper had a pop top that was pretty slick. There was 2 u-shaped bars. Inside of the camper, each leg attached at the outside with the u part sticking into the inside of the camper, one u on the top and one on the bottom. The two "u"s were attached to each other. All you did was push the bars toward the outside to raise the top.

It's pretty hard to explain a simple concept! Here is a camper on Craiglist that shows the idea.

Thanks for all the ideas everyone. In the end I decided to just hinge it on one end like the old VW Westfalia/vanagons. My idea of using two wood supports on each end that you push into place just wasn't sturdy enough. Seeing as how alot of our vactions are to chase wind, it needed to be rock solid in windy conditions. I had to sacrifice headroom, but at least one place to stand comfortably is better then none at all.

I sewed up the canopy last night and I'm hoping to attach it today. If I get it done I'll post a pic to show the final product. I sure hope that it works so I can be done stressing about it and get to the fun part of deckin out the interior. Building a teardrop was definatly easier. Everything on a vehicle is rounded and metal is a little harder to work with!

Well, here it is. I guess I left a little more room for error then I needed to as the canopy isn't taught, but it should get the job done! I'm fairly happy with it. Very solid, and provides the standing room I should need. I think it'll be water tight as well and I epoxyed the hell out of every thing. I told my wife if I get cancer in life it's because of epoxy, not my unhealthy lifestyle!
