Only 1 door

Postby rabs » Thu Feb 28, 2008 7:47 pm

Hi All, Is there any problems that ive missed in putting in only 1 door in my grasshopper, I like the idea of having a nice door size tinted window for views and lighting. I understand about someone climbing over another person to get out but other than that I cant think of any reason, any thoughts

Cheers

You could get a really nice cross breeze with two doors and both can sit in a door to put your shoes on. Besides if there is an emergency someone is stuck waiting.

My main reason was the whole "crawling over my wife in the middle of the night" thing, but I also think it will be nice to be able to get a nice cross breeze going.
It will also be slightly easier to retrieve something from inside the trailer if I can use either door.

I have one door with a 15 x 18 window, and a big 15 x30 in the other wall. Plenty of cross ventilation. I went with one door for simplicity and to have a bigger window on one side.

Thanks Miriam, All good points that must be considered, on the issue of cross breeze I have scored a couple of windows that will fix that but the safety issue of getting out quick is making me think although a caravan only has one door also mmmmmmmmmm

Im not at that stage yet as Im still welding the frame but these are things I need to plan ahead for

cheers

Two doors are nice when you need something inside and the one door is on the opposite side.  Sometimes when you are set up the distance around adds up.

Ditto what G-force said for my tear. The large window on mine is an emergency exit type that swings out. The lower third cranks open. I get a good cross draft with a homemade box with two 12 volt computer fans in it that can be hung on the window.

If you do go with one door make sure it is on the kerbside as it's an ADR requirement and you wont get it registered otherwise ;)

As an aside, when building it is quite a bit cooler inside with two doors open, a door is a very big area and opens up a very large area in the side of the TD, a window would have to be very big to get the equivalent ventilation. I'm glad I decided to go with two doors despite the hassle of making them ;)

I'm also looking at making zip up inner doors that can be press studded to the walls on the inside. They will be flyscreen material and will let me leave both doors open all night for ventilation but keep the bugs out.

Cheers

I met a teardropper a few years back that told me he had to jump out his side window. to escape from a bear on the other side chewing on his teardrop.
I saw the damage to prove it. He told us always to have two doors.

Well at least I won't have to worry about bears.. ye Steve I wouldn't want to make that mistake, I'll wait and see how my first door comes up then I'll decide

Hey

Dean A wrote: "My main reason was the whole "crawling over my wife in the middle of the night" thing" There's a problem? LOL/JK

A nice wide single door with an functional window w/screen on the opposite wall would be nice.

Does anyone have problems with water leakage at the cabin door or the big rear hatch? How best to seal it?

Why hasn't anyone found a dead bigfoot? When was the last time you found a dead deer, bear, coyote, fox, squirrel, etc. that died in the woods.........Hmmm.

I'm just finishing a Larger trailer like the grasshopper and I have one door.

I put the one door in because I have 2 mattresses and a dropped floor. The one mattress sets on top of the other on the side without the door during the day to make a sofa w/table. Couldn't do this with 2 doors.

I also have 3 windows and a roof vent.

Happy Trails
