The Smallest Tear Yet

Postby campadk » Tue Jun 16, 2009 5:34 pm

Did a search and didn't see any reference to this 'teardrop'. It makes a 4x8 tear look huge!

I don't know if this is turning into a thread hijack. The VW rig that started it off was really neat and looks to have been a good idea but some of these others are also interesting in their weirdness. A Superbird camper must top them all for strange factor. What else is out there?

Did somebody mention the Clip car evolution? Built in France. Attaches piggy-back onto the tow vehicle using 2 couplings, one to a standard tow hitch and the other onto the roof. I serviced one a couple of years back and it is very clever but typically French in its insane wierdness.

Don't those old VW Beetles have like 36 horsepower? I wouldn't think you would tackle to many mountain roads with that rig.

I can answer that one. Having served on US Naval Submarines that thing is larger than my old bunk. I can't tell that it did me any harm ...

OMG! that is wonderful! I love how tight of a radius he can turn. I want one so bad!

I have been trying to find a very small camper to go with a small, economical car for a long time, so I am very glad to have found this forum.. Has anyone tried building using bamboo for construction? It is incredibly strong and environmentally friendly.

Lets get back on topic of the awesome VW trailer

Postby fishervw » Sun Aug 30, 2009 12:17 am

I have been finding some answers about the hitch seen in the beetle footage. I found 2 patents online. 1 was about the specialized harness made for the safety chains. They pivot on a ring to allow the 360 degree movement.

http://www.freepatentsonline.com/3827722.html

Secondly with regards to the electrical, they made a rotation electrical circuit board.

http://www.freepatentsonline.com/3797862.html

I need to find out more about the specifics now of the trailer itself. I have talked to a mechinist who stated with the information found he can easily recreate the hitch components. Now we need to know load displacement of the trailer! Someone help me find a trailer and who knows we can post some DIY plans for everyone to enjoy!

Very impressive investigative work. We has some pretty serious RV historians here and everyone was pretty much stumped on this one. Funny thing too, all of the comments on YouTube people love it, never seen anything like it, where can I get one... etc. I still wonder why it didn't take off?

Hi "thesarasmile", interesting question that I think got buried in this thread. Introduce yourself in the newbie section and ask this question again. I for one would be interested in the responses.

Welcome!
