Sketches of my new trailer

Design & Construction of anything that's not a teardrop e.g. Grasshoppers or Sunspots

Postby Greg M » Tue Dec 18, 2007 9:26 pm

Nope.

I toyed with doing it for a while, but decided against it in the end. Maybe next time. Did I just say that?!?

new camper

Postby rabs » Sun Dec 23, 2007 2:39 am

Hi All, Just thought I would post up a modified design for my grasshopper/Mini Hopper style, Its the same dimensions, but I bobbed the rear end for better departure angle when offroad...It also means that I woudn't have a full door at the rear. I need to make up my mind soon because its getting started in the next week or so... What do you think??

cheers

I like the bobbed tail but you might need some chassis back there to mount the springs, looks like they'll have to be short with a very high arch otherwise.

Whats the tow vehicle? the reason I ask is if it cant make the terrain then it doesn't really matter if the trailer can ;)

Cheers

Hi Steve, I'll be towing behind a GQ patrol but in thinking about it i agree with you regarding spring placement etc, so i think I'll stick with the original plan, hows yours coming along?

Thanks RABS!

The timber would be the 1/8" thick kind. Right know it is 24 gage steel painted metal flake dark gray( to keep the bare metal from rusting ). If I did the drawing in the correct color it is now you would not be able to see most of the features of the trailer "Box" design. If the weight is not to bad I might try to do a wood veneer like pictured. If I do not like it I can remove it and paint the metal again. I need fenders and the box will be removable from the trailer frame as it is right now. I might later weld up a custom frame with torsion axel for it in the future. I will have a complete set of running light mounted on the box so all I have to do is plug in the four flat wire plug to a piggy - back harness and the trailer has lights per codes.

Finally started my grasshopper

Postby rabs » Tue Feb 19, 2008 4:26 am

Hi All, finally got the steel for the frame and have begun the build so hope to get the frame finished and all welded up by the weekend.

Still using this trusty old electric hacksaw that is probably 40 year old and still cuts a precise angle

Image

There is going to be plenty of room inside for a comfy full size matress and some much needed cupboards, just gotta weld a few more cross pieces for the trailer base and then get the body frame cut out of 20mm box steel and welded and mite I say that its nice to fire up the Mig, I anticipate that the build will be constant so plenty of pics are on there way

And my trusty fourby that will tow the Bush Pig

I like that saw. I haven't seen one for about 40 years. would not mind having one.

Shoulda been at my place about a year ago, I scrapped one of them. Didn't really want to but it had a tooth missing from the drive gear and I didn't think it was worth getting one made. They do work well tho.
