Vardo

Thanks for answering my questions.

Are you putting a permanent top on it or using a tarp?

I am wanting a permanent roof.

Will be checking back to see your vardo completed.

Hmm, didn't see one from you. Glad I answered it though!

We'll be using canvas. Not sure exactly what brand yet. Several builders have used "Firestar" brand with good results.

I thought about a hard roof and it may be something we add later down the road.

Mrs. SaGR wants a different kind of Vardo - Which is more along the lines of a Reading. So that may be the next project. :D

OK save this as a weird idea!

Bob Henry... Are you listening?

What's the largest sheet of Lexan you can buy? Source? Cost?

I just thought of a clear top on the Vardo... Sliding privacy curtains the length of it...

Only negative I can think of is the greenhouse effect when summer camping.

Hmm what about Sunbrella? Ive gotten some good prices off of ebay for projects on my sailboat. Would have to look nicer then a tarp.

just my 2 cents

Err, 21.33 square yards in a single piece? Never seen Sunbrella material that big.

12*16/9=21.3333

The one company I talked to down state can get it in 12' width up to 53' long (special order) - otherwise they carry 12' x 20something single piece.

Hey folks! Sorry for the lack of updates.

We have been building (and planning the next one!).

I always update the Picasa gallery if I forget to update here. http://picasaweb.google.com/RamblingOak ... irectlink#

Lots done since the last post. We got all of the bows up, on, glued and screwed. All the stain is on, primer and first coat of paint. Now we're praying for a few more days of warm weather to get the second coat of paint on.

Sorry I was lost somewhere too ! I think 4x8 is the norm and there are 4x10 and 5 x 10 possibly available but $$$$$. I used multiple sheets and joined them with ice dam tape and a protective strips without a single leak ever.

I would make a skylite box on top. It would look a bit like a trolly top and could be mistaken for a raised roof or a roof rack. I think it would look more historically correct. I truely love our clear topped teardrop but in the July / August sunshine it can be a bear to try and cool. That is the entire reason for the barn so we could camp in the dog days of summer.

Yeah I nixed that idea for the bow top. Just too expensive... We'll see what happens with the next one.

Sorry for the lack of updates!

All that's left is to build the bunk (still working on ideas - it's only 6' wide so sleeping across won't work for me!), paint this inside, add the cover and slide her onto a trailer!

Pictures in the gallery linked below.

Lot's of ideas running around, especially since I haven't been able to work on the Vardo. Too cold to paint, stain or glue!

Thanks Nawlins!

Wow, been a while. The only things that have been done since the fall is cutting all the lap joints for the bunk frame, and having the inside covering (ornate cloth) cut and sewn to fit.

We'll be back and working on it in two weeks.

Still haven't gotten a trailer and I missed a sale on the 1700lb folding trailer at HF. DOH! We'll get there soon enough... Still deciding as well if i should just use a landscape style trailer and make the bowtop slide on and off. This gives me some flexibility.

More soon! Happy Spring! 8)

What a fun build! Can't wait to see photos when it's finished.

Here is one as seen at the Lake Perris event last month.
