MiniBago Update

Postby GregB » Mon Oct 30, 2006 2:24 pm

I cannot believe how tough it is to find time to work on the trailer. I now realize I have to simplify things drastically to actually finish this thing. Plus, everybody on the forum is saying how they build a second trailer with the ideas that they got from the first one. Soo, the MiniBago is going simplified. I have used a simpler shape that I can build from 3/4" ply, I'll leave the galley with a counter and upper cabinets and USE it first. Then, I'll refine and finish the trailer. If I need to, I'll sell and build again since it should be easier the second time. Hence, the New Weekender II!

Flat hatch in the back for easier access, 10'6" long at the base, 18" at the foot of the bed for the pooch and storage while traveling, upper storage cabs for petcool and generator, etc. I think that I have found a way to make the entire box quite rigid. since the ply will only be joined at the edges I will use dovetail splines at the 90* corners to strengthen the joints and allow the use of no framing except to support the two roof joints. So, that is the latest. I am taking Friday off this week to start on the box.

That looks pretty good... but 3/4" plywood?

Check out the final weekender design... It has 1/2" plywood sides and 1/4" plywood roof.

You can see the design here...

I've been away for a while, so I take it your old design is "out the window"?

Sheesh, it seems I change my mind on the teardrop more than change underwear! This is less a comment on my personal hygiene than it is on my teardrop building skills. I WAS going to build the walls with 3/4" ply but found that scarfing the sheets together will probably be more work than sandwich construction, so I'm back to a fully insulated tear. I've been playing with paint schemes, so here is the latest.

Here is an alternative paint job and interior that I considered, then rejected as I'm too lazy to convert from table to bed. Keep It Simple Stupid - I have to continually remind myself.

And here is the final interior I've come up with. The space at the end of the bed is for gear storage while traveling and a place for the dog to sleep once we get there. The cabinet space overhead (in the middle) will be for the Petcool, batteries and electrical. The front cabinet will convert to a bunk (my wife and I have just been approved for adoption).

Cool. I like the transformation on this project. I would say now that your new design makes your Minibago a Teardrop. Help me out if I'm wrong here!. The new design has a "unique" shape, but looks like it could now be classified as a "Teardrop"!

Questions? Comments?

Yeah, it's kind of a post-modern, post-industrial teardrop.

I thought all teardrops were post-modern? Would that make it a post-post-modern? But I like the post-industrial tag too.... Actually it's a really sweet looking design whatever you call it... It has caused a couple changes in my pen and paper work. (CAD is not my forte') someday soon I scan a couple of them in for y'all, to peer at. just no time today... and Happy New Year!
