Or kick him out into a tent :D

His bed actually does slightly overlap our bed, but nothing to serious.

very nice, your main bed is going to be a pull out couch correct???? Thatlooks like it will be really nice. Im going with two bunks in the front and a queen size full matress in hte back, theres about 3 feet inbetween that will be used for storage and a mini shitter. Each bunk area is going to ahve its own lcd tv and ps2 or whatever video game they like for those rainy trips. Im putting a 22 inch for me and hte mrs. Im buildign with luan on the outside and 4 inch pine boards as my braces, I will then build up the inside to my specification , insulate and panel the inside, im still a little wishywashy on the insulation. I dontsee us doing much winter camping ,but ya never know. WHat are you going to use as far as power? plug in? 12 v? keep the pics coming

Our bed is a little bigger than queen size, and it will become a pull out couch someday, we are going to finish the trailer on the outside, camp in it a few times and then make changes as it seems neccessary. The queen bed is about 10 to 12 inches off the ground.

The upper bunk is 30 inches wide by 72 inches long, the lower bunk is 30 inches wide by about 63.5 inches long(basically the width of the trailer) and only about 6 or 7 inches off the ground, it will be were we store our axe and our camping chairs.

As for power nothing planned right now, I'm going to use battery operated led tap lights for each bunk with one big tap light in the middle. If in the future I need or want power, I'll build a power center at the front of the trailer, that way I only need to drill one hole into the trailer for power entry, If I do do the power I will probably do something solar based, or just buy a little quiet generator, as we never go camping in camp grounds that have ac hookups. I like the TV idea, maybe in the future I don't think the wife would go for it, yet.

I hope to have the ceiling and roof in tomorrow... I'll post pics when done.

bunks

Postby Jeeper92 » Tue Jul 31, 2007 10:33 pm

I need help with my bunks, im lookign at building something very similar to yours , but ii need the top bunk to be able to hold the weight of a grown man, i would imagine that chain would pull right out if ya had some real weight on there, i need a way to support the bunks over the master bed without 2x4s hanging all over hte place, any suggestions?

Sorry I haven't got any more pics up, family crap has stalled me. Hope to get some more stuff done tomorrow.

As for the bunk I used a single 2X4 as a roof rafter, there is an eye bolt in the 2X4 but not directly above the bed ( i moved it from where it was in the pic) I actually put it about 3 inches inside the wall, that way the chain will hang on an angle and not pull on middle flexy point of the 2X4, the 2X4 is supported at the end by the wall itself, inturn the eyebolt is pushing more or less directly on the wall. The front of the bed is supported by a 2X2 frame work that is screwed into the front stringers. My wife was up on the bed 150 ish pounds and the bed didn't seem to move too much. One thing I would do if an adult was to sleep in the bunk would be to augment the bunk with a swing out leg that attached to the wall.. Does that make sense? If you did that you'd be surprised at how stable the bed would be.

So basically the entire back of the bed is supported by a stringer and a hinge along the wall, the front of the bed is supported by the 2X2 structure, the rear of the bed is supported by the chain.. and add a swinging arm.. Plenty of support....

Again sorry for the crappy art work...

a pic of the shape I was planning, and then a pic of the aprx location. The leg would be on a hinge so as to get it out of the way during the day.

ps also my eyebolt is support by a big inch or inch and half washer.

Have you started construction yet or still planning. I had thought that you were planning on putting 2 bunks across the front, if so I wouldn't think that you would need to worry about the chain...

yes i did

Postby Jeeper92 » Wed Aug 01, 2007 7:40 am

I did start construction, walls are going up tonight or tom. (depending on how many beverages i have today). I was jsut curious about the chain thats all, i had to change the floor plans on mine. I am going with a square, thats it 6x10 square. No angles no 43.5 degree cuts none of that , just straight cuts, thats teh extent of my wood workign ability so i realized it and moved on, the walls actually came out pretty good, im going to get some tile tom and lay that.

well, finally have the trailer completely enclosed, beds are made, interior ceiling is in (what a pain that is/was). I need one more sheet of ply to enclose the front lower part of the trailer, and I need to make a door.

I had hoped to be epoxying today but its not going to happen. I need to devote some time to the house and yard and my kids. I'll be working on the trailer in the evenings during the week hoping tohave it completed next weekend. I've said that before so I'll see.

The one thing that still suprises me is the time some of the stuff takes to do. When I first started the trailer I had 3 full days before a family trip that I worked on the trailer. In those three days, I made a floor, 2 walls and all the stringers. The rest of the build has been signifacantly slower, insulating, cutting panels for the interior, figuring out how to hang beds...

Good thing that our camping weather has up until this point of the summer totally sucked. If I ever build another trailer I will definetly give myself much much much more time. Oh well life is just a giant learning experience, and now I have trailer builder as another notch on my belt.

just open the picture w/Microsoft Office Picture Manager

hit "edit pictures" then compress or resize it! VOILA! you'll have pics that you can post. don't you think everyone out here that's answered all of your questions have earned it?

it was a little tough for me too, but if i can figure it out you can too! i can't learn much from your build if i don't see the pics....

Hey Beevel the walls look great. Got a nice uniform shape to them..

Can't wait to see the finished product. It does seem to take forever to get the nit pickin detail work done. The results will be worth it..

latest update pics.

Postby beevel » Sat Aug 11, 2007 7:46 pm

Well I still haven't had a chance to epoxy the trailer, but I am done with construction. I finished the door today, still have to weather strip it but it's built, hung and the door lock locks.

Tomorrow, hopefully I'll be doing the sealing. I'm going to try to do it all in one day, gap fill, cover joints with fiberglass tape and roll one 2 coats of epoxy... long long long day.

Oh well here are 2 pics of where it stands now. Next pics will be of a completed trailer.

Oh and the trailer is definetly balanced with the majority of its weight to ther front. So despite the fact that the wheels are in the center of the trailer I don't forsee any sway problems.
