Design & Construction of anything that's not a teardrop e.g. Grasshoppers or Sunspots

Thanks everyone. I have to admit I'm quite proud of it, although there are many many things I would do different next time.

CliffMeister-- no galley because we didn't really want to give up the interior space for it. We (my wife) always use a coleman camp stove outside on the picnic table or on our foldup table and we pack everything into rubbermaid containers. Once my kids don't want to sleep in the trailer I'll be making cabinetry up front ( much like the squidget) for storage of clothes, food etc, until then we'll just use boxes... Our trailer is for us just a "big wooden tent"

Hudsonite--- Tagging up here in Canada (BC at least) is easy. I bought the trailer at Canadian Tire and it is licensed as a utility trailer/homebuilt. I have had a popup camper and a larger travel trailer in the past and neither of those had much more in the way of lighting. Reflectors for the side and taillights ought to be enough. I also don't generally tow the trailer at night, we're ussually pulling into a campground by 2 in the afternoon.

Miriam--- I have a few things I have to take care of around the house, but I think the interior should be done in the next week or 2... I'll take pics and post as soon as its done. I also need to make some sort of awning....

Thanks Jeeper...

What are you skinning your trailer with? You were going to resin and paint weren't you?

Know why this is funny? I have been following the progress on this since Day 1, and never noticed the truck, more than it was an SUV capable of towing the trailer. I guess I have a pretty narrow focus! :DOH2:

Cliff

P.S. - Yes, it does look very sharp!
God Bless

Postby Jeeper92 » Sun Aug 19, 2007 3:41 pm

Im going to skin it in frp and trim it it in aluminum flushing, I am also going to cover the bottom part (where you painted) in aluminum diamond plate, there will also be a red stripe down the side to match my jeep.

Hows the interior coming? I really like yours, i sold mine before i camped in in. Its funny i bought a Shasta trailer parted it out for 1600 bucks , built up a 6x10 rectangle camper for 300 bucks and sold it for 500. So im up 1800. And i just tore down another shasta and in hte process of parting it out. I got this one for 50 bucks and its in better condition then the last one

I haven't really gotten a lot more done on it. I basically ran out of time, and instead of finishing it in a rush I decided to wait until the new year. The weather here was so terrible that we didn't even manage one camping trip.

I want to repaint the outside as well, I decided to use bondo to smooth some of the corners ( you know the old saying leave well enough alone; should listened).

beevel, what did you use to build your wood floor with? (looks like 2x2 and 1/2" ply?). Did you have any problems with the wood frame splitting on you? Reason I ask, is cuz I am also using 2x2 with ply over it and can't control the splitting. What size/type screws you used? and oh yea, lastly what did you use to attach your wood floor to your steel frame?

My floor is actually quite simple. 3/4inch plywood bolted to the steel fram with carriage bolts. The 2X2 that you see around the endge is actually just there (top and bottom) to give the floor a little rigidity but mostly to give me a glue/screw surface to attach the walls too. I used construction adhesive and 1 1/2 inch wood screws. The trailer is extremetly sturdy, I haven't used it yet though. Should be finishing it next month, just some minor things to finish and then we will start camping. Given that the weather agrees with us.

Cool looking camper. I'm about to start one thats about the same size.
Do you have any pics of your interior?? Are you happy with the size or would you do something different?
