Patches - Popup to Roundtop Standy Conversion

PostPosted: Mon Oct 15, 2007 9:14 pm

I've been working on building a roundtop standy camper on an old popup camper frame. Since ya'll like pictures here are some of Patches. I call it that cause it's built of bits and pieces of whatever I can scrounge. :)

Hitch and one side. Other side is a mirror image. Windows are from an old camper shell. Spare tire and mount are from the donor popup.

Image

View of the back/door end. Lights are from the popup. Door is from an old camper that has severe water damage. Back "porch" is a piece of 2x10 screwed into the popup bumper.

Image

Inside showing couch. Started life as a futon frame. Removed the ends and bolted it to the walls of the camper. Just a little shimming needed to make it fit perfectly. Plastic boxes underneath will work fine for storage till I get/make time to build something better.

Image

And a picture with the foam removed. The plywood is the same as I used for the rest of the camper. Scrap from a box plant. All I had to do was go get it.

Image

Couch in down or bed position.

Image

Starting to skin the inside. The plywood I am using as the inside skin is packaging vinyl siding is shipped in. I LIKE free stuff! There are some dints and dings but I can live with them till I get something better. :D

Image

After putting the first piece up I decided to cheat and jack the ceiling panel into position. The jack is an old mechanical house moving jack and was a LOT easier to use than trying to hold the paneling in place with my head and back while screwing it into place.

Image

Second row of the top done. Now for the hard stuff in the front corners. Hope to finish that part tomorrow.

Image

That's all for now. Will try to post more as I get it done. If you are interested in seeing more of the build pix, there are more posted on my blog.

Later,
dave

I love all the trailers being made from pop ups. I really like your round top. I'm beginning to think thats all the old popups are good for.

And free...free is very good indeed.

Very cool. But with a point in the middle top, it will be difficult to get a sunroof for it.... :o

What are the external dimensions? Think you have enough openings for fresh air? What is the exterior and how is it attached to the framing?

Actually shouldn't be that hard at all. And it's not pointed but rounded. Think of the old round topped cabooses with a raised area in the center of the roof and small windows around it. Just cut out and frame a square or rectangle and put in your sunroof/roof vent. Though if I find I need to do this, I'll roof that part and use the small windows around the side like the cabooses for light and air. I've got almost 24 inches between the 1/2 inch EMT (conduit) ribs so could do a 23" x 16" dog house on top. 8)

The body is 10 feet long, 6 feet 2 inches wide, and about 6 and a half tall. Frame from front of hitch to back of rear bumper is 14 feet. From ground to top of roof is 8 feet 2 inches.

So far while working inside it air hasn't been a problem. The side windows and window on the door seem to be plenty. I do plan to add a small computer type fan above the door to get rid of the heat buildup at the top, just in case.

Exterior is some kind of commercial plastic used for siding I think. I got a several truck/trailer loads of it for hauling it off. Works/cuts easy and bends quite well.

I used the same method the original popup used for attachment to the frame, as I also used about 2/3 of the original floor, which was screws through the plywood into the metal frame. The outside layer of plywood for the walls was attached to the floor with a hardwood strip (1x1 inch square) screwed (again through the metal frame) around the edge of the flooring and the walls then screwed into the edge of the plywood flooring and also into the side of the hardwood strip.

We'll see how it holds up. If it shows any signs of movement I'll go around the side with a strip of metal under the siding and bolt it to the side of the frame and bolt through the walls sandwich style. :)

Thanks for all the kind words, folks! I really appreciate any and all comments, as this is my first attempt at something like this. Posts on this site have slowed my construction down quite a bit, but that's a good thing as some of the things I have read have kept me from making some serious mistakes that would have had to be torn out and redone.

When I first posted, in the Introduce yourself forum, that I had a bit more than $15.00 in this camper, someone asked just how much over it was. As I just had to buy another pound of screws I thought I'd give an update to the current cost out of pocket.

Previous amounts spent:

Screws $1.99 lb X 5 lbs = 9.95
Caulk $1.88 tube X 2 tubes = 3.76
Total materials $13.71
Tax is 8% $1.10
Total cash out of pocket for materials bought just for this project is $14.81

Additional spent:

1 pound Screws & tax $2.15

Current total is now $16.96

Note that that figure doesn't include gas nor will I even begin to make a guess on the amount spent on beer since I started this insanity... 8) :beer:

The cost of beer is exempt from the cost of a build.

If it wern't my project would have easily doubled in cost. You need beer to celebrate the little victories as when something fits the first time. You need beer when you need to gather your thoughts on how to cover up a screwup. You need beer to take the edge off of sore tired muscles when you have crawled in and out 57 times in 1 day to fit the interior finish or electrical. Let's face it you just need beer .....

Ceiling Finally In

PostPosted: Fri Oct 19, 2007 9:52 pm
by depatty
Been working and not posting. Got all the top pieces in. Finally! Never again will I do one quite this way. But I have learned a LOT doing it. And a lot not to do again. Getting to the point of building the interior now. Should go faster than the ceiling went. Still got lots of molding to do but that can be done most any time. Slowly, slowly getting this elephant eaten... 8)

<img alt="Laying Out The Top Curves" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixlaying-out-the-top-curves.jpg" width="500" height="375" />
Laying out the top curves on the back wall center piece. This one was a REAL pain in the kester.

<img alt="Getting Ready To Install The Center Piece" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixgetting-ready-to-install-the-center-piece.jpg" width="500" height="375" />
Got the spaceing strips in, the jack shimmed and braced and centers marked, ready to put the center piece in. For the umpteenth time...

<img alt="Had To Add Additional Shims At The Top" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixhad-to-add-additional-shims-at-the-top.jpg" width="500" height="375" />
Had to add some extra pieces at the top to get it all spaced right.

<img alt="Cat Bringing MUCH Needed Refreshment" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixcat-bringing-much-needed-refreshment.jpg" width="500" height="375" />
Cat bringing much needed refreshment.

<img alt="After Checking Again Time To Do The Other Side" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixafter-checking-again-time-to-do-the-other-side.jpg" width="500" height="375" />
After checking several times it's time to make a pattern for the other side.

<img alt="It Be In" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixit-be-in.jpg" width="500" height="375" />
I finally got it in. Tis close enough for now. Will add molding at a later date.

<img alt="The Sketter Fire" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixthe-sketter-fire.jpg" width="500" height="375" />
Been building a fire the last few nights to help run the sketters off. Plus it makes for much nicer break times.

<img alt="Top Done" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixtop-done.jpg" width="500" height="375" />
A new day and the top is now done! At least the real bad multi curved stuff. Now all I lack is the flat curved stuff...

<img alt="Last Piece In" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixlast-piece-in.jpg" width="500" height="375" />
This was the last piece I put in. Molding will hide the problems.

<img alt="First Paneling In" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixfirst-paneling-in.jpg" width="500" height="375" />
And got the first two pieces of paneling in. Still got one strip to do in the right corner but waiting for a scrap from another cut to fill it in. Tis all scrap after all and I only have a limited amount of any one kind.

<img alt="Kitchen Back Wall In" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixkitchen-back-wall-in.jpg" width="500" height="375" />
Kitchen back wall now in. These curves are not near as bad as those on the front wall.

<img alt="Scrap Piece Installed" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixscrap-piece-installed.jpg" width="500" height="375" />
Had just enough from the kitchen wall to cut a piece for the right corner on the back wall.

<img alt="View With Couch Raised" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixview-with-couch-raised.jpg" width="500" height="375" />
Back wall view with couch raised.

<img alt="Chair Rail Trim Added" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixchair-rail-trim-added.jpg" width="500" height="375" />
The chair rail trim added. It started life as door molding. Cat came in with a couple of truck loads of scrap wood a while back and there was 8 pieces brand new that they had thrown out with the old wood, so I have enough to trim the door and use like this too. Will take it back out and paint or stain and then this piece will be used to attach the bottom shelf to. This back wall will have shelves almost all the way to the peak of the ceiling when I get it finished.

<img alt="Toilet Side Rear Wall Paneled" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixtoilet-side-rear-wall-paneled.jpg" width="500" height="375" />
Toilet will be on the left side of the door. Going to make a bench that you raise the lid to get to the toilet. Also going to use a curtain that pulls around for privacy instead of a solid wall. I think there is enough ceiling height to use a piece of 1/2 inch conduit (emt) like a shower rod but curved from side wall to top of door frame to pull the curtain on. If not will use Velcro or hooks. Got the paneling in on the end wall and one section on the side wall though you can't see but a small section of it for the plastic drawers.

<img alt="Figuring Out Where Things Will Be" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixfiguring-out-where-things-will-be.jpg" width="500" height="375" />
Doing final layout before starting to build the framework to house the drawers. Figure they are super light weight, paid for long ago and most importantly already built. Just got to make a framework to house them.

<img alt="Kitchen Side" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixkitchen-side.jpg" width="500" height="375" />
Kitchen side layout. Ice chest is about where it will ride. Drawers are about where they will be too. Another 2 like on the other side will be to their right. When finished there will be a shelf on top of the rightmost 2 on both sides for use as a side table when on the couch. I plan to make them big enough for our laptops and/or to eat off of when sitting at the couch.

That's it for tonight. Will post more as I get it done... ;)

Still going. Starting to build the inside cabinets, toilet and storage areas. Have now stared at it long enough and finally decided how to built most of it so things should start moving a bit faster.

<img alt="Fan Over Door" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixfan-over-door.jpg" width="500" height="375" />
Added a 12 volt computer fan over the door. Still have to put paneling over the area. Wiring is in chanel cut into the wood. Paneling will be put in with screws so if/when I have to repair/replace it will be easy to get out.

<img alt="Fan From Outside" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixfan-from-outside.jpg" width="500" height="375" />
The fan from outside. I drilled these with a hand drill. 13 rows of 13 holes minus the ones where the hub is. Then had to drill them bigger to increase the air flow. My hands and arms still hurt. :( Don't think bugs can get through easy even when the fan is not on. May add a cover inside for times when we want all the heat we can get.

<img alt="The Toilet Area" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixthe-toilet-area.jpg" width="500" height="375" />
Starting the toilet bench. Decided to use plastic on the back. Easier to clean and when leaning back on it won't scar/scratch as easily as the paneling would.

<img alt="Closer View" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixcloser-view.jpg" width="500" height="375" />
Closer view of some of the connections. Using mostly hardwood strips. Got a truckload of scraps from a cabinet shop a while back. Nice stuff for building this kind of structure.

<img alt="Curved Wood" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixcurved-wood.jpg" width="500" height="375" />
The curved piece on the wall is actually two pieces, each about 3/8 of an inch thick. Oak I think. Cut, drilled and then screwed the first piece in in 3 places then drilled and screwed the top piece in in 5 I think. The outside piece is attached at the ceiling with 2 screws. There will be plastic on both sides of this unit with another piece or two in the middle to screw the plastic to. The privacy curtain rod will be attached at the top and curve to the middle of the walkway then back to the wall by the top of the door post.

<img alt="Toilet bench from inside" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixtoilet-bench-from-inside.jpg" width="500" height="375" />
Toilet bench from the inside.

Just realized I hadn't mentioned the black stuff on the floor. It's more of the same kind of plastic that the outside is covered with, but this is 1/4 inch thick and black vs the dark green. 4 feet by 6 feet. Early on I decided I didn't want to worry about water in the floor so decided to put this stuff down. Once everything is built I'm going to put some kind of base molding down and will caulk that so any water/liquid that spills or gets in can be mopped up without damaging anything.

<img alt="Corner Molding Holding Plastic In" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixcorner-molding-holding-plastic-in.jpg" width="500" height="375" />
Corner molding holding plastic in place. Will take it back out and stain/paint it later.

<img alt="Seat Removes For Access" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixseat-is-removable.jpg" width="500" height="375" />
Seat will be mounted on the piece of plywood with the opening cut into the center of it. The bench seat will be affixed to the paneled wall with hinges and swing up and latch when the toilet in use.

<img alt="Showing Retaining Cleat" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixshowing-retaining-cleat.jpg" width="500" height="375" />
Seat piece raised to show retaining cleat.

And that's it for today... ;)

More screws, broken saw and a rogue yellow jacket

Had to get yet another pound of screws so adding it in to the total.

Previous amounts spent:

Screws $1.99 lb X 5 lbs = 9.95
Caulk $1.88 tube X 2 tubes = 3.76
Total materials $13.71
Tax is 8% $1.10
Total cash out of pocket for materials bought just for this project is $14.81

Additional spent Oct 17:

1 pound Screws & tax $2.15

Additional spent Oct 22:

1 pound Screws & tax $2.15

Current total is now $19.11

Will try to get more pix and put them up by this evening. Worked on it till after midnight last night and started again this am around 10. Started off fine then went downhill fast... :(

Pushed the red button to get the radial arm saw to turn on but it wouldn't move. So tried the off button and it pushed in way too far. :cry: So I unplugged the machine and took the switch out. Half the back is broken out but all the pieces are there. Take it as far a part as I could get it. Tis an old saw and has screws in places you only find rivets now. See all the major stuff is ok just pushed out the back. So, go and get some spray lube and oil and come back and try to spray it to find the can is empty.

That's when that yellow jacket flies up and stings me on the arm... :x :cry: He/she/it dies quickly! I go in and put something on it.

Back out and use the oil to coat everything that I can see that moves. Put the broken piece of back in place and hold it. Still no joy. Note that a flat return spring is bent and straighten that. Put it back together again and it works. Find some phone wire (old heavy copper stuff) and tie the back in place with many loops. Fortunately no electrical on the side that broke. It still works! :thumbsup: Put saw back together and plug in. It starts up and switch works better than it has since I got it several years ago. :thumbsup:

I get back to cutting the piece I started to cut nearly 2 hours before or course after measuring for it again. Just one of those days... :roll:

Almost done with one side of storage and toilet area. Still got to build the cover seat for the toilet and upholster that. Also got some more plastic to cut to cover some of the storage area but that shouldn't take but a few minutes. Bit more paneling on that side and it's done.

Then I get to move into the kitchen and electrical side. Also still lack shelves over couch/bed but those don't have to get done to use it.

More later if I'm still able... ;)

Here are pix of the bits I have gotten done in the past couple of days.

<img alt="Donor Castoffs" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixdonor-castoffs.jpg" width="500" height="375" />
Old seat cushions castoffs after I got the foam out. Need the foam for a seat cushion for the toilet cover seat.

<img alt="Foam Going On" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixfoam-going-on.jpg" width="500" height="375" />

<img alt="Changes" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixchanges.jpg" width="500" height="375" />
After feeling it decided the front edge needed a bit more pading. Cut another piece about an inch thick and stappled it right at the edge.

<img alt="Finished piece" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixfinished-piece.jpg" width="500" height="375" />
After the last picture I got busy and forgot to stop and take any more pix. I pulled the cloth covering the sides down around them and stapled it on the inside.

<img alt="View of right side from door" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixview-of-right-side-from-door.jpg" width="500" height="375" />

<img alt="Seat attached and hinges installed" src="http://www.technoprimitive.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/camperpixseat-attached-and-hinges-installed.jpg" width="500" height="375" />
Seat pretty much finished. When closed it seals against the foam seat. I plan to add a piece of plastic to the bottom of the seat to further seal it when closed.

More as I get to it... ;)

Got bits and pieces done. Spent quite a bit of time finding enought tile to do the kitchen counter and then figuring out the pattern.

Decided to start at the top in doing the kitchen so put the top kitchen shelf in first. Then put in the water jug enclosure and added bracing from the ceiling. Supports it fine.

Water jug back view. Bungee cord hooks around square board at back and runs through handle and then back to board to hold jug in place. I think it could travel in this position without any problems but will still store it on the floor at least the first few times.
