trailer design

Postby robm7 » Wed Apr 23, 2008 1:10 am

Hi all, I have been a member of the forumfor a while but have only made a few posts way in the past. I am looking at building a tiny trailer but I have a few requirements. First: I would like the trailer to be small enough to tow behind a quad in the bush. I would like it to ba able to sleep two. And the kicker is that I would like it to be strong enough to be able to hold the quadwhen I am on the way to the location that I will be quading from. I know I am asking alot. Is this imposible? I was thinking of a small flat roofed trailer that had aq top that popped up similar to a VW van. Does anyone have any suggestions for a off road trailer

Thanks Rob

ok, so I have decided that my trailer will kinda resemble a sportsman trailer http://www.sportsmobile.com/4_trailer.html
now I just have to decide on the materials needed to make it strong enough for its intended purpose[/img]

Hey Rob,

A trailer like that should be fairly easy to make strong.

It's a small box, so you can use the torsion strength from the box towards your frame...

I would make the frame out of 2x2x1/8" tubing, and make the tongue 2x2x3/16" tubing.

Take lots of pictures, and keep us in the loop! :)

Mike...

build update

Postby robm7 » Wed Apr 23, 2008 11:36 pm

I was at a friends shop helping him with a comercial build and was fortunate enought to talk him out of some of his composite honeycomb structural panels. As soon as I got home I started on my build and here are a few pics of what I have accomplished so far. the trailer box inthe photos is just dry fitted together for now. This stuff was too expensive to take any chances with but I think it will be very nice when completed.
I am am using a composite honeycomb panel with aluminum on one side and filon on the other. The panels are 1 inch thick and everything is held together with aluminum extrusion and structural adhesive.
