Weekender revisited

Postby Jimbo » Mon Mar 28, 2005 10:11 pm

Well, through good fortune at work, I was just given 12 sheets of 3/4" plywood and was thinking that a Weekender is in my future. I'm planning on having my first Teardrop finished in time to use on April 22nd for a shakedown trip then, picking up a trailer to do a Weekender with for my Dad. I'll keep everyone informed when I start and take lots of pictures. I have been thinking of some slight modifications but overall, I plan on using Mike's original design. Once I start, I'll keep track of time to see if it can be done in a weekend. ;)

Hey Jimbo,

Just wanted to make sure you had the latest information.... this is the final plan...

Also, remember to allow a weekend to build the body, and another weekend to paint it. This assumes that you have the trailer built and ready to go. So if you plan on camping on April 22nd, you only have 3 weekends left... you're running out of time!!!

Mike,

I'm going to use my modified Cubby for the 22nd. The Weekender will make me a member of the Second TD Club once I start. :)

Hey Jimbo,

How's your weekender coming along? Got any progress photos to share with us?

Not yet. It's been too cold and I have to build this one outside cause there's no room left in the garage. That's another reason I like it being a quick build. ;)

I just checked, Harbor Freight has the trailer on sale!!! I may go ahead and order it for the Weekender. In case anyone is interested in the trailer, here's the link: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=90154

HF Trailer

Postby An Ol Timer » Sun Apr 03, 2005 2:04 pm

I bought the same trailer back in January when I started my Teardrop. I'm getting near completion and so I'm getting ready to register it. I was getting the info off the VIN plate on the tounge and noticed that it has a GVWR and GAWR of 1450 lbs listed. The add says 1154 lbs and it did when I bought mine. I bought from the local HF store. What is the difference between the listed 1154 lbs and the other weights of 1450 lbs.

The listed is 1450 which is the Gross Weight including the weight of the trailer. The 1154 is the max load you should carry in addidition to the trailer. At least that's what I think.

HF Trailer on Sale

Postby davidbyrum » Thu Apr 07, 2005 12:15 am

Hi Guys, my first post so I just thought I'd let you know that the Harbor Freight #1450 trailer is on sale at the store until April 11th for $199.95. I was getting ready to order online for $219 and thought I'd call the local store to see if they carried them. Much to my surprise it was on sale and tax exempt (in Texas) to boot. Hope to start on either the Cubby or Weekender this summer.

Yes, tax exempt until you go to register it in Texas..... :)
Seems every county in Texas has it's own procedure for regestering trailers. Because the HF has a vin I ended up having to carry a Grimes County tax form to the Harbor Freight store where I bought the trailer to get the "managers" signature before they would regester it. Had I known all this I would have told them it was homebuilt, would have been easier. When I asked what if I had bought it mail order, I was told "well, you did not." Had no problem regestering it once I got the sig, but I believe "vehicle taxes" are higher than sales tax.... :(

Tax

Postby davidbyrum » Sat Apr 09, 2005 11:37 pm

Yeah, I figured they would get me one way or the other with taxes, just glad it wasn't both. Thanks for the info on registering with the county. Think I'll call Hays county before I go to see what's required here (it would be a bummer to have to drive back to Austin for the manager's signature).

Any updates on everybody's Weekenders? My health has recovered to the point where I can at least walk out to the garage and look at the pile of lumber there!
I just started a new job with a small aerospace subcontractor and I'm getting anxious to get back on track.
