Teardrops n Tiny Travel Trailers

Has anyone ever heard of a pop up camber built on a 4x8 trailer? I'm thinking of a pop up with an extension on the side of the trailer rather than the back making an 8x4 bed and the living area on the actual trailer. Much like a conventional pop up but only one side. I figure it would be comfortable enough for two to sleep and have indoor cabinets and seating and possibly a port-a-potty. The front side could have and awning and an outdoor kitchen. Let me know what you all think. It certainly is unconcentional, but I think it will work. I'll draw up some pictures and scan them later. I see how your's works, but I see it folding open like a book doubling the size. Half living, half sleeping like a traditional pop up. The entire top would be more like a tent, A-frame style. I've drawn up some pictures and I'll scan them in tomorrow at work. I think that it will be very space efficient. I'll probably mock up the tent with tarp before I have it stitched up with tent material. Thank's for your response. Wil

Hey Speedster , welcome to the board!
I had a Viking popup several years ago & it had 1 wing ,with a double mattress on it. the box of the popup was about 4 x 6 . It had a stove & a small counter space with an Icebox under the counter. It was great for 2 . The table did fold down for a single bed, you could sleep 2 on it . but ya better really like each other! The top stood up with spring loaded legs that ya had to push up by hand. wasn't too bad.

Desert Wolf, Adventure Trailers, Kimberly Kamper, etc. all have tent-toppers like you are describing. I had thought about doing the same thing originally, but the tents that work for this are Italian made and expensive, 'course you can always DIY.

Hey, Thank's for all the great replys. Looks like this group is pretty enthusiastic about tiny trailers! I'll let you all know my progress, I'm going to pick up the Harbor Freight trailer on Saturday. I'll post more pic's as I progress. Now how do I solve this problem... When I first started talking about this teardrop "thing", my girlfriend said she'd be all for it as long as she has an oven and cooktop (think Flamenta) and a place to shower and potty. (think freestanding privacy tent) So as soon as I drew up the plans and shared the two "important" solutions, she was happy. Maybe you could paint "Four Seasons" on the side!?

Grant Whipp has some great looking ones that are similar to the idea in your sketch. You can look at them in his gallery Here.

You might be able to get some ideas from the Glen-L website, look at the Trail-a-camp. Although it is not exactly what you sketched, you might be able to get some ideas from it.

I think the jumping jack trailer is great, but does'nt have a kitchen. I see mine with a nice kitchen with cabinets, a sink, stove, and an ice box. I like the idea of opening it up and having everything there already. Instant camping! My wife by the way is still not to fond of this project.... looks like i'll be camping with the dog. Wil
