Squaredrop galley door ideas

Postby mtcowboyblue » Thu Apr 29, 2021 10:30 pm

Hello everyone!
My name is Spencer. My wife and I live here in Montana. I’ve recently started my build. So far got the trailer done, now on to the camper. Its more of a large squaredrop. If i can figure out how to post pics i will. Its 5x10. Although I will freely admit I AM NOT A CARPENTER! So everything is pretty new to me. I’m having a hard time figuring how to finish the galley door so it seals and is waterproof? I know that squaredrops are not the most popular design, but I’ve spent more nights under a pickup topper than I’d care to admit. I absolutely detest having to crouch for everything! So if anyone has any pics of the rear of the squaredrop galley I’d be greatly appreciative.

This is how I built the back of mine, I would Just order a door Next time.
I don't expect to have any other problems with my door, but it was not easy.

Thanks Twisted for the idea! Your trailer looks sweet! Does the galley door pivot at the top? Unfortunately I have stick built mine. But in hindsight considering the price of lumber, I regret not going the route you did. Even having to buy the tank of argon, I’d have still been money ahead over lumber. Today i just got sides pmf’d. So I’m pretty stoked about that.

I hear ya on going lightweight. Mine is a tank with wings. 3/8 ply outside 1/4 ply inside with 1.5 framing, as well as insulation.

* P.S. to my PM to mtcowboyblue concerning the super simple, straight hanging sheet of plywood hatch. Only reason I hung it straight down, with no side flanges, was to enable the sliding/swingout operation of the on-board generator. The smaller inset door on twisted lines trailer would be more weathertite than mine, which required extra weatherstripping and draw-latches to achieve. Plus, after many years, the three hinges overhead need a little help for 100% alignment, once or twice a year (1/8" +/- side-to side).

I still haven't come up with my game plan that 100percent solid. I'd like to go with the door hanging from the top. As I want keep that miserable abominable snowman cooler on a slide out drawer. Plus it's keeps the snow off my face, while cooking breakfast. But also nothing is set in stone.

Did you ever come up with a design plan on your galley door?

You did a great job. I was wondering if you needed the help of locksmith specialists at a certain point while building. You said: "I know that square drops are not the most popular design, but I’ve spent more nights under a pickup topper than I’d care to admit. I absolutely detest having to crouch for everything! So if anyone has any pics of the rear of the square-drop galley I’d be greatly appreciative." The trained locksmiths se20 workers could suggest other options that would have worked for you.
