Engineering a Room2Go (build)

Postby brycelowe » Tue Jul 09, 2013 8:27 pm

Hi all,
Starting my build thread as we made some good progress on the trailer last weekend.
This is the design thread I started:
viewtopic.php?f=27&t=56286

After trying to conceive our own profile we ended up moving back to a known profile. This tear is modeled after the Vacations in a Can Chilli Pepper.

Looking good. Making me jealous right now. I really like the design. That's solid works?

It looks like a good shape. Under-deck storage is a good idea. Those black tubs look like the plastic tubs that I've used to mix small amounts of cement in. Is that what they are or are they metal?

Thanks, yes it is solidworks. The rendering leaves a little to be desired but it gets the point across.

Thanks also. I intended to build boxes for the "basement" but I found these in my parent's shed and they work perfect. They are rejected vacuum formed plastic bins from a manufacturing place a friend of the family worked at. I have no idea what their intended purpose was.

It is quite the shop and i wish I could call it mine. It's my boss/mentors backyard shop and he is the best as he lets me come back any time.
Maybe I'll slip some shots of the cnc machines in future pictures.

Those bins couldn't have been more perfect.
It's been a little while since my last update. Been extremely busy and poor the last couple weeks since we just moved to a new place. I'm hoping to get back on the build next weekend.

Bought this pocket hole jig from general and it has been worth every penny.

Here's the assembled side wall frame.

I peel n sealed the bottom of the floor before bolting it down.

built up the back cabinet/bulkhead piece and finished the side wall frames

Knocked out gluing the inside wall skin to the frame with some "heavyweight clamps"

Here's a peek at what the inside will look like.

Looking at the size of the wheel leaves a little to be desired. So while I was at work talking about making the fenders, one of the guys decided to give me a set of 32 ford fenders.
Exactly like these:

Now I just have to figure out if I'm moving the axle back and how I'm going to get wheels and tires to fill those fenders.
I'm thinking about making my own spacer/adapter to fit directly to the HF hubs or buy a new axle. I've considered ditching the axle and springs all together and mounting some torsions on there.
Any thoughts on that?

Great looking build. I really like the door shape and the storage in the floor.

Thanks!

This is another late post but we go a lot done last weekend in just one day.
It's starting to look like something but I still have a long way to go.
So many decisions to make. Due to budget I'm thinking I will glass the roof edge instead of using aluminum trim. There are some places that I feel trim is needed, like the doors and hatch. I'm planning to put the battery in the tongue box and i haven't decided where to put the electronics. I could put them in the box with the battery or run power wires to the bulkhead and create a channel under the counter about the foot of the bed. does anybody have any insight on this?

I applied formica to the counter top. Attached the walls and spars for a dry fit (I want to glue all the joints). Also started to build up the cabinets.

I love the "basement". What a great find and repurpose.
