Popup camper into a Teardrop build

Postby redmech » Sat Oct 05, 2013 9:02 pm

Well last weekend, at the Bois D' Arc meet, I found myself looking over the homemade Teardrops. All were nicely executed. I have admired these campers from a distance the last few years.

One of these build threads, I saw where someone used a pop-up frame and built a teardrop on. Well this 1972 StarCraft camper was my wife's grandparents for about 15 years, then her cousins and their husbands owned it for a couple years, and then they sold it to my wife's brother. He used it once, then it's been setting in her parents barn for the last couple years. The roof has had horribly bad hail damage, and my wife's cousins had to put a tarp over the aluminum roof to keep it from leaking.

Tomorrow we will start ripping the house off the frame, start stripping the frame, cleaning it up, and checking it out. Hopefully pick up some plywood, and figure out the exact design. The square part of the frame, that you would put the floor of the teardrop on measures 7' 10" by 6' 4". I will most likely cheat the length to 8 foot, will have to get the rest of it planned out.

Well, picked up some plywood and lumber for the floor. Tore the house off the floor of the camper, then put the roof back on the trailer upside down, and piled everything back on top of the trailer and backed it into the garage (don't want it messing up the neighborhood). Dumpster should be here Tuesday, to pile all the old camper into. Then finish tearing the floor off, then start, prepping the trailer to get the build started.

I think we decided to do the Generic Benroy style. This one will be sort of a Wide Bennie, that name may stick.

Did you scavenge all the useful bits? It looks like a square tank is on the heap.

The aluminum scrap has value these days. Even with some debris on it. Be careful of what you throw away!

For sure, will salvage and scrap. I am waiting till I have a dumpster, before I make anymore little pieces of trash. When the dumpster arrives, I will disassemble, even for the sake of not filling the dumpster up as fast. They charge every time it gets emptied. The old water tank has been cracked since my wife's grandparents owned it. I saved the aluminum table mounting strips, and the leg off the table. Also have some good plywood out of the slide outs. My daughter scraps all the aluminum she can scrounge up. Cans, foil, anything she can get a hold of.

Very cool Weirdnerd. We have had some busy last few weekends, and just tonight got the trailer back in the shop. Time to finish tear down, and get this moving again.
