Benny the Benroy! The build journal

Postby Jdhiker » Fri Nov 01, 2013 6:51 am

Yes I know what a lame name for a teardrop but hey it's a Benny!

So I had full intentions to build a tear from the ground up but couldn't resist buying a half built Benroy style 4x8

When I say half way in mean I got the trailer
Walls cut stained and installed
Roof, skinned inside and out and insulated
Wiring throughout for 120v
Galley and interior cabinetry without doors in galley but did have doors inside

So really there is a lot done.

My wife and I don't like Dark wood or stain so that is how this one is done. See pic below of the before pics

Here is the galley ripped out to the Sleeping section

Then I built new cabinets using birch and also skinned anything showing the old dark stained wood with birch. All will get a light amber shellac with multiple coats of clear over it. This will also happen in the sleeping compartment

This is the start org the interior cabinets

I have also been changing much of the wiring to low voltage for all of the lighting
I will have a 120-12v converter in the galley at the bottom driver side where the shore power will plug in when available. Otherwise. A battery and solar will be the power source for dry camping

Electrical outlets both 120 and 2 12v power outlets. Plus a switch for the galley hatch LED strip lighting has been added last night

Here is the galley switch. With LED indicator. The wood is moist from me wiping away the glue with wet rag.

The exterior will be painted to match my old 64 Shasta astroflyte that a new friend of mine was given from me and restored. This is the Shasta now. And how I will paint our little Benny.
The Benny WILL have wings on the rear just like the Shasta. That Shasta was in the family from it's beginning to just last year!!!

I enjoyed your blog ...I am building the same style in the 5x10 version...
I too like the natural color of wood..what looks nice is when you add contrasting dark wood accents with the lighter woods birch-ash-maple...
