'70 Shasta StartFlyte

Postby 2bits » Sat Jun 07, 2014 5:08 pm

Well my long search for a campable camper is done. I picked up a couple of really good deals on project trailers along the way, but I am glad I can start focusing on spending my time and money working on these campers and not driving all over creation buying them.

I found this one on CL and it was about 45 min away from me near Canton which is a nice drive. He was asking $1300 and I got if for $900. It only has very limited water damage and it isn't from structural issues, but only around the roof vent in the bathroom and the septic vent pipe on top, and not bad at all. The vast majority of the ceiling and wall seams look new. All the original appliances are there except the toilet, but I don't want one anyway, I am just going to use it as a shower only. All the windows are in tact and open and close as they should and all the window screens are there too which is awesome. There is a storage door in the back below the tail lights which is nice because it gave me a chance to see if there was rot back there and it was VERY minimal which is shocking. The kitchen counter looks nice as well as the dinette area. It has a screen door that isn't missing the screen!

It's only a couple feet smaller than the Kenskill at 14' (not including the tongue) but it weighs about half as much. My truck does alot better towing it. I think I got an awesome deal with the condition.

Today I rolled out the awning which is in perfect shape! that is very cool! I also installed a new inner spring mattress in the rear and Scott and Gerri came by and gave me the rock guard/shade for the front window since they have almost the exact same model, it was a perfect fit!

The things I want to do before camping are...

Replace the roof vents
Fix the door knob
Replace the tires
Repack wheel bearings
Install an air conditioner

Relax and camp!

Does that bring back memories I lived in one almost identical the that while I was paying child support.
A couple winters in Spokane, WA helped bring it to the end of it's life.
Had the space between the walls fill with frost and ice, than the frost started forming on the inside walls.
The vented Olympic CAT heater couldn't keep up with the cold.
Not to mention having the holding tank freeze up.
I'll look for some pictures of it later.

Wow! Good deal.

Check the electrical and tires. Then go camping!

Only found one picture. That's my mom in front of it way before I got it.

But I still have the flyer for it.

A couple of photos...

I installed some Shasta wings and the stainless emblem, gave it a nice scrubbing bath, fixed an awning bracket, hung some curtains, installed the license plate (Had to dremel off the old one), painted the door, rear bumper and wheels silver, then got new tires. I also replaced a roof vent. Next is to get the dinette cushions done and get to work on the fridge, plumbing and propane systems. I also have a suspicion that the tail lights might actually work too!
