First Teardop Build, Woody from Chicago

Postby lazyriverstudio » Fri Sep 12, 2014 11:08 am

I saw Algo Dan's build and really liked the simple layout and storage capacity. Decided to build one similar on a Northern Tool, 5 x 8 trailer, cedar exterior. I make a living as a wood carver, so I plan on doing something fun with a hand carved back side. I plan to carve my company logo on the back and make this entire build tax deductible :D This build is a little out of my comfort zone so very excited!

I started a couple months ago, so lots of pics to start.

Plans are still not completely done in this image. Making some of it done as I go.

Exterior cedar, .75" thickness. Simple lap joint

124236
Finally got all the cedar glued down and prepping to add a flush trim piece around the perimeter... so I wont have any end grain or lap joints showing.

124235
Ready for the flush trim

124234

124241
Cutting this was a little tricky... for me. But it fit nicely.

124239
Interior 1/4 birch ply is glued

124240
Finished with a clear water base.

After researching here, I decided to go with an epoxy finish. When its all done, I plan on sanding down and final coating with a satin spar. I hope to get rid of some of the gloss.. I hope.

124243
I installed the two walls and the cabin/kitchenette wall last night. I have to build the components in my shop and transport to another location for assembly. So its kind of tricky. But beggars cant be choosers :)

And that is where I am at so far. Hope to be done and ready for the first road trip by mid Oct. Starting the cabinets this weekend.

Cool!

Welcome to the forum. I am looking forward to following the rest of your build, which seems to be going very fast for just a couple of months of building! :applause:

Nice design & construction on this one. I really like the idea of a tax deductible trailer, an advertising expense is a good way to go for the business. Self-employment has its advantages and drawbacks (the only money you can really make is what you can afford to steal from yourself). Great job so far.

Hopefully, you will have a place out of the elements to store it for the winter. Over the years it can change a bit, hate to see all of that finish get any water under it later on! Welcome, tim

Thanks KC and Noseoil :)

I do plan to keep in a garage when not in use. Ya, I hear you about self employment having some cons. But overall, it seems to work for me. :)
Thanks
