Shiny Diner build finished (Never really finished)

Postby Aint2Proud » Tue Oct 14, 2014 8:15 pm

I apologize for not documenting the build piece by piece, but my gallery has most of the pics. When I started this project I had a 5 yr. old and twins that were about 2. Now I have a fourth grader and two first graders...but it is campable now. First and foremost, thanks to Mike. The Lil' Diner profile is one of the most beautiful things I have seen and it inspired me to build this. Thank you to all the forum members for their support and advice to new builders, you have made us just bold enough to try our hand at building these addictive little beasts!

So here are the stats - it is 60" wide by 54" tall inside and will fit a queen mattress. It is 12ft. long with the galley. It is stick built and insulated on three sides (not the floor). The frame was custom welded out of 2x2 steel. I think the total weight is around 800 lbs, but that is a guess. The minivan doesn't even know it is there when towing. The lights are recessed rope lights and are remote controlled so no holes in the ceiling. The fan is a Fantastic Fan with rain sensor. The tv screen is a 21" drop down model and the radio head is also a DVD player with Ipod dock. I have hitch receivers on all four corners for attachments such as a table, awnings, AC stand? etc. The bed frame, yet to be made, will be 15 inches off the floor allowing for roughly 30 SF of storage underneath. The space in the galley and under the bed is open from front to back stretching 12 ft. so I can carry surf rods for fishing. The aluminum fish panels in the galley were made from an image I found and took to a waterjet company to cut out. I then sanded them and put sharkshide on them to protect. There is a cabinet accessible from the galley or inside the cabin for food/storage as well. The walls were epoxied and then painted with an outdoor paint prior to being covered by the aluminum. The aluminum is floating held on by trim and fender screws only. The bottom of the floor was painted with the tar paint stuff and through bolted with 1/4" SS bolts to the 2x2 frame. The walls were built with a dado at the bottom that fit over the edge of the floor. They were then pocket screwed through the floor into a poplar base board. The fenders are from Grant. All the "studs" are 1x4s from the big box store so are the spars (poplar). The headliner is 1/8 birch ply from a smaller lumber store. Enjoy and Thank you!

I appreciate the kind words. There are a lot of hours there, but they were fun, frustrating, ultimately educational, and meditative. I got a lot of joy out of the process. Just need to find a gathering close by now!

Congratulations! :applause:
It looks really good. I like the fishes in the galley.

You're right. A home build is never truly done because the builder is always dreaming up ideas on how to make it better and that's not a bad thing.

There may be a different way, but once you are logged in go to "gallery", then "personal albums" and search under "A". I think mine is on the 3rd or 4th page of the A's. Hope that helps.

To get to a person's galley from a thread just click on their name "Aint2Proud" in the post that is in blue font. It opens their profile and then just click on "Search user’s images " and you can see all of their pictures

Another way is to click the user name in the avatar at the left of the post. On the page that pops up look under "registered user" and click the blue text to the left of "Gallery:" that says "Show personal album of user name".

The easiest way is to just click on the camera icon under the persons avatar (but that may just be from base unit, not mosbile aps).
