Project Scout-a-bout

Postby FruitaDave » Mon Jun 08, 2015 10:36 pm

My wife and I decided to build our first teardrop after recently breaking my hand. Needed a project to occupy me while I am not able to ride my mountain bike.

Plan is:
5x9 size
skeleton walls
aluminum skin
no power (led tap lights instead)
doors, hurricane hinge and latch kit from vintage technologies.
we already have a lot of camping gear so our galley will be mainly storage with out a built in stove or anything.
We want to be budget minded but not skimp on materials so our trailer last a long while.

This is our rough barely to scale profile we are shooting for. Subject to change of course.

We were searching for our trailer but I was unhappy of the quality for the price we wanted to spend so we decided to build our own. I was lucky enough to have a friend do the welding since I can't get a glove over my left hand. The body is 2x2x3/16 angle, the toungue is 3 inch 4.1 pound channel. The leaf springs are from a sukuki samuri so they should be sprung well for our target weight of 1000 pounds. I have 600 dollars in our trailer as it sits with paint. Hope to have the floor in by the end of the week.

First, welcome to the site, and congrats on building your own trailer. If you need help, just ask. Building is a big part of the fun.

1/4 inch subfloor ply over the insulation.
133006

Took a vacation day and finally got some more done on our trailer

Tried to draw the profile unsuccessfully a few times before I pulled out Tha nails and string and got it right.
133014
Door cut first.
133019
TI'm to make a batch of fire starters.
133015
Then their were twins. We left the upper rear uncut because we are still un decided on the galley, and I want to have options.
133021
We had to do a little imagineering to decide where to cut the holes in then walls.
133016
And of course the one wall standing pic.

Looking good!

What's the black pan behind your water jugs? Is it a shower pan? If so, do you mind sharing the source for it?

Those are just utility tubs we use for everything(dishwashing, food storage, etc). I got them off amazon because I had a prime trial with free shipping to get our mattress as well.

Here is the link for the tubs: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0001N470 ... ermaid+tub

Thanks. They look nice and heavy duty. Do you think they would be sturdy enough to stand in while taking a quick PTA shower?

I bet they would, those are the tuns most restaurants use to bus tables. At 15 bucks I would give one a shot.
