Scotty JS715 Rebuild - Update 1/15/16

Postby dmckruit » Thu Jan 14, 2016 9:51 pm

I started posting this on the Tearjerkers site earlier this week. I finally had time to post on here as well. If anyone needs any measurements of anything on this Scotty, please let me know. I plan on measuring out the frame in case anyone needs the specs to build a frame.

Just had my Scotty JS715 delivered today. I know I have to do a complete tear down and rebuild, but the price was right $50. I spent $125 to get it flat bedded the 25 miles to my house. The door side wall buckled a bit in transit. Which was already rotted when I looked at it 2 months ago.

Put a tarp over it to keep more water from getting inside, as the rains are coming this evening again. I plan on cleaning it out tomorrow as it is full of junk from the last owner.

Below are pictures I took soon after delivery.

Today was a rainy one, then the winds came. My goal today was to shore up the door side wall so that it doesn't collapse till I am ready to tear it down completely. The trailer was filled with junk which was my main objective today to clean up.

I removed the door and the awning. When these came off, the whole side collapsed to the right of the door. I removed all the debris and put a two by four to support the roof in that area. I then took out all the junk and cushions. Snapped some photos and put some tarps over the holes before the wind and the snow arrived.

Below are some interior shots:

Went in tonight and took measurements of the interior, then I tore out the stove top, the stove hood, and pulled down the shelf above the sink which was just barely attached to the ceiling. We had 3" of snow today and the wind was blowing in the colder weather. I found out while working that with the tarps covering the doorway, and a trouble light and a coleman lantern, it was warm enough to get my work done. Here are a few pics of the aftermath. When I took the shelf down, some of the interior ceiling collapsed. The aluminum shell is still intact though.

Warmer out today. Spent 2 hours after work taking out all the exterior lights and fixtures. Looks like the fridge isn't going to be good based on what the back looks like.

Still going to be warm tomorrow, so I hope to take out the windows. Going to the RV show in Pittsburgh on Saturday afternoon, but hope to have it tore down to the floor by Sunday.

I think it looks like a great project! Mine was more "together" than that, but still went down to bare frame and now started back. Take those photos and keep the head of steam up! Before long we'll both be setting in a lawn chairs showing pics to people, as they gasp that it "can't be the same one", and saying "Yes"I did it myself! Dave

Looking at paint this morning. I bought two cans at Lowes. I got the Valspar #86017 Nautical (lighter color) and Valspar # 85201 Exotic Sea (darker color). I could only get the lighter color in satin, the darker was a gloss. A friend of mine is going to do the painting of the aluminum, so he just needed a color to go have it matched. I am leaning to the more lighter color as it looks closer to the Scotty blue.
