Something comes to mind when you mentioned that you plan to put the porch lights over the doors. Many times people end up putting a drip edge over the door to keep rain water from running in while entering and exiting in bad weather. I'm thinking this might shadow some of the light coming from the porch light and kind of (maybe) explains why you see most porch lights off to the latch side of the doors. Maybe.
