my off road build so far

Postby hugh » Sun Nov 01, 2009 2:33 pm

I started this spring, the goal was to build a small trailer using ideas from this site to make a small trailer I could use on and off road in all 4 seasons. A quick few words about it. First came the 2x2 square tubing and a 2000 lb axle. Then I built a deck and took it out for a couple of test runs. Once that was out of the way the walls went up and the windows, etc were acquired and installed. 5 opening windows, 2 on the drivers side, 1 larger window passenger side and 2 sliding windows at the rear. The door was donated by a neighbor from an old motor home and I was able to cut it down and also reuse the non opening window for it. The rear has a 45 degree kick up for ledges, deep ruts etc. The walls are 1/4 plywood outside with 2x2 frame and 3/8 rough plywood inside. The roof came from a Starcraft tent trailer. 2"insulation in floor, 1 1/2" walls and 1" in ceiling. The outside was coated with a West Coast epoxy then primed and painted with Interlux polyurethane paint. The roof and side edges were seam sealed with an RV tape and then an extra strip of butyl tape which was covered by some aluminum trim a friend made. I took it camping twice, the 2nd time it tipped over on the trail heading back to the highway so when I got it home changed the axle to spring under to lower it and added a ball hitch. Fortunately when it tipped only the paint was scratched. It has 31" goodyear tires, a 12V light system and is also wired for 110. The inside is a tad over 8' with a seat across the back that folds into a 6' bed. Inside is approx 58" wide. I put some gray indoor/outdoor carpet on the walls to hide the rough plywood. Today and tomorrow I am finishing the carpet and installing a car stereo. The picture with the trailer behind the Jeep is from before lowering the trailer, it now sits about 6" lower.

Very Nice. I was looking for a military jeep trailer to make as an off road trailer for my XJ.

BTW where did you get the spare tire rack for the XJ

Hi How hard was it registering your homemade trailer? Im from winnipeg too, And Im in the beginings of a build. That thing looks pretty mean man.

Turns out we have it real easy compared to some of our American friends. All I did was go down to my autopac agent and say I was registering a homemade trailer. They asked if I used new or used materials building it, I told them used stuff I had laying around. There was no sales tax, the next and last question was the GVW, I told them 2000lb because it has a 2000lb princess auto axle. That's it, pay the I think $65 plate fee and done.
