Here is the start of Yet Another Gypsy Vardo. I just hope I can make mine as nice as Steve's.

I will post pics here when I figure out how to do it.

Sink and stove are out and the canvas is off. Isn't that lovely lino and stick on tile? Where ever can I get more? (dripping sarcasm)

Now the rotten Hardboard ceiling is removed leaving the wiring and the styro insulation. Pulled most of the wiring as we are going to be using this mostly for medieval events. Besides lanterns help warm things up.

Yay, I can embed pics now. It looks like someone tried fixing the ceiling before I got it. The insulation was partialy eaten by the adhesive. Stuck to the roof good tho.
Even our insulation is bi-lingual

New ceiling

Postby tinkerman » Tue Feb 09, 2010 12:15 am

Here we have the new Mahogany and cedar ceiling. Boarded up the hole where the roof vent was and sealed the ever lovin' crap out of it. Filled it with spray foam and covered both sides with plywood and tar-ed it up real good. If it seems a little wavy it's 'cause I missed the cross members a couple of times. Live and learn.

table and benches

Postby tinkerman » Tue Feb 09, 2010 12:18 am

the table and benches are now removed and I am begining to frame out the bed.

The previous owner only tiled where they could reach. I am going to be laying some nice cherry and tigerwood flooring down this spring after the walls are done.

bed

Postby tinkerman » Tue Feb 09, 2010 12:22 am

Here the bed is started and I have some birch plywood cabinet carcasses for height to see how much clearence I have.
Image
You can just barely see it at the far lower corner of the picture. I have built a long bench that spans the width. I think I am going to take that out and make a couple of box benches and a drop down table so that the wife and I can use it for plaing cards or eating in bad weather. Or a nice place to put the lap top for watching movies.

I have opted out of putting the bed as high as this and built it ower, to just above the cabinets. In fact I am using them as some support.

It has been nice, I work for Windsor plywood so all the wood has been cheap or free. The 1/8" mahog. Plywood was like $6 a sheet and all of the cedar was dunage that was being thrown away and so was the birch for the cabinets. those were a miss cut. Total cost thus far: around $150

Hi, Tinkerman:

Welcome to the forum. Do you have a sketch or picture of what you expect your vardo will look like when you are done?

Thanks

Not really, I am doing a model of it first. I kind of started just doing it on the fly so I am gathering ideas this winter and my wife and I are deciding what we want. I do know that it will be a cross between a ledge and a reading. The door and windows will look kinda like this

Love the earthy look but I am still working out the logistics of how to build the solid walls and keep it a pop up and not too heavy.

Hey all

Postby tinkerman » Thu Mar 11, 2010 11:44 pm

Hey all, I am looking for a cheap and easy way to raise the pop ups roof on my vardo. I have the existing crank system but am looking to motorize it for not alot of moolah. Anyone have any suggestions?

I had thought of that but I am not sure if my 18v cordless will lift all of the weight after the build, I will give it a shot though. Any other suggestions that might work?

a big snag

Postby tinkerman » Fri Apr 02, 2010 3:35 pm

Well, I went out to re-rig the vardo roof raising system and realized
that what I had planned to do was way more effort than it is worth  .
To keep the existing walls and roof on this old pop up
is causing more problems than I had first anticipated :x .
So what Rachelle (my wife) and I have decided to do is demo it right down to the trailer frame and if it is in good shape,
we will start again, sigh. So I guess it is on to destruction for me. I will keep y'all posted...
