Woodrow's Build

Postby bjeppson » Sat Oct 13, 2012 7:15 pm

The build saga begins. If I did this correctly it will have pictures of the wheels.

I have two options for a trailer frame. I have a fellow who will weld a basic frame with tongue per the specs for the New Cub or the Grumman. The frame will be 58" x 84' with the tongue extending beyond. My options are steel @ $200 or aluminum @ $350 to include the price of the materials. The aluminum will be sized up for strength. I will save 52# if I spend the extra $150. I will mount a Dexter Torsion axle under either with special consideration given to a barrier between the steel axle mount and the aluminum frame if I go that way.

I would appreciate your thoughts.

I would just go with the steel and save $150. depends on how much that 52lbs is going to bother you??

Aluminum can be susceptible to fatigue and cracking issues if the configuration is not designed and built properly.

It is about 1/3 the weight by volume of steel, but also only about 1/3 the strength, so not necessarily lighter.

On top of that, when welded any hardening (heat treatment) present in the stock material is negated (annealed), reducing the strength significantly.

It can be done, but for the application, I feel steel is the better choice for most people. Opinions may vary.

Thanks,

Good points, steel it is.

Yesterday I ordered a Dexter torsion axle. Once in, I will have the frame welded. I am chompin' at the bit to start making sawdust.

Here's the frame with the Dexter axle for Woodrow's build. I guess it is too late to make it into a lamp. Next step, prime and paint. I had this welded as I am a sawdust guy.

Woodrow's Build - Frame with wheels

Postby bjeppson » Wed Oct 31, 2012 10:40 am

Semi rolling stock. Trying to figure out how to get it warm enough to prime and paint the frame. A version of Murphy's law, it was warm enough to paint until I picked up the frame.

Re: Woodrow's Build - Power Control Center

Postby bjeppson » Fri Nov 02, 2012 9:18 am

It must be like Christmas today, the Power Dymanics PD4045 arrived a few minutes ago. I am acquiring some of the various components so I have the actuals to plan into the tear. For me plans and dimensions are good though the actuals minimize my mistakes as I test fit as I go along.

Size question, I realize 8' and 10' are generally the standard length of a teardrop with the 8' version limiting the galley. I planned a 10' however are there drawbacks to a 9' teardrop?

Thanks to the info I have found on other threads I have planned my electrical circuits. It may seem odd at this point in construction though I like to know where the outlets, lights will be in relation to the framing. I have a Progressive Dynamics 4045 Intela Charge Power center. Attached is my circuit plan.
